worked for awhile,

Well, it seemed to work for a few months. Then the plastic inserts began to fall out and the seed won't stay in. I cut some plastic replacements from a milk jug and these worked for a month or so, but more of the originals keep falling out. Three are gone, and the feeder is not a year old yet. My feeder hangs under the house overhang and so is not rained on; no problems with the spring, though the "stop" that keeps the cage from going too far down fell out fairly soon (I just put a piece of wire in its place). Grackle can feed at this feeder well. Larger birds such as blue jays and a large woodpecker will occasionally hang onto it in some way, but they don't persist. Purple finch and gold finch like it; I get some cardinals even (with black oil sunflower).

Short term effectiveness,
This review is from: Perky-Pet 337 Squirrel-Be-Gone III Wild Bird Feeder (Lawn & Patio)
This feeder worked brilliantly when it was new.
A spring of heavy rains rusted out the mechanism so severely that it stopped falling smoothly and my little furry friends figured out how to hang so the cage wouldn't budge. Not effective after one season.

Looks good, limited effectiveness,
This review is from: Perky-Pet 337 Squirrel-Be-Gone III Wild Bird Feeder (Lawn & Patio)
Let's face it, squirrels are just rats with bushy tails. They can gnaw, thwart, ruin and get into ANYTHING. This feeder is no exception. It only slows them down...a bit. Our PhD squirrels learned how to just push the entire feeder sideways so seed just trails out...this after the weather/squirrel gnawing combo ruined the mechanisms that allowed the holes to close down. It looks pretty. Just don't expect it to be squirrel proof.

This birdfeeder looks very nice and is extremely attractive to hang in your yard. However, I have had trouble with some very adamant squirrels about eating the birdseed. I had even put out a squirrel feeder away from the bird feeder, but they kept coming back and once they jumped on this birdfeeder, the spring attached outer grid pulled down and stayed down and the little metal attachements that held it up broke off. I bought 3 of these feeders and all three were broken within the first week of being hung outside. They were hung off greased poles over 6 feet off the ground. One of the feeders came detached from the top and crashed to the ground when a squirrel jumped on it. Maybe my squirrels are just oversized (hardly, they are little and ratty) and extremely rough, but these feeders just weren't worth what I paid for them. Now i have three broken feeders and laughing squirrels!

We purchased this about 2 months ago. The first month it worked flawless. Now- we've had a little rain, and rust is appearing all over- and we have been in a drought. Also, squirrels have interferred with spring squirrel be gone system- so it does not slide properly- partially due to rust- which allows either- a- squirrels to feed or b- birds not able to feed. I would not suggest purchasing it.

squirrels defeat the plan,
This review is from: Perky-Pet 337 Squirrel-Be-Gone III Wild Bird Feeder (Lawn & Patio)
I have owned 2 of these feeders. In each case, squirrels hang on the feeder and gnaw through the plastic, fashioning their own holes to get at the seed. This is even with the doors closed on the feeding ports. So I did not at all find it squirrel proof.

We are at about 1 and a half seasons using our SBGIII feeder. It has generally been satisfactory however one big problem has developed starting in the second season. Squirrels have learned to chew away at the plastic seed shielding feeder openings. Once the plastic has been broken enough that the openings plastic reinforcement no longer hold and protect the opening, the seed flows out freely. I've used duck tape to close off the two opening that have so far been comprimised to try and make the end of the season. Next year the feeder will definitely need to be replaced.

the feeder consists of three tubes surrounded by bird supports and strategically-placed doors. These supports and doors are suspended by springs with adjustable tension. Birds can sit on the supports and feed, though the supports are a bit small and the larger birds have to learn to eat at an awkward angle.
When a squirrel jumps on, his weght pulls the supports/doors down, blocking access quite effectively. At one point we had two squirrels rooting around on the thing, with no success. When the squirrels jump off, the springs pull the door open, and the birds return. This last step doesn't always work: sometimes seeds jam the doors closed. Violent action on the squirrels' part can tangle the springs. So sometimes the feeder requires a little attention to get things working again. Our first eventually unscrewed and feel to the ground, a good 20-foot drop. We bought a second one, and it worked for about a year. Then the squirrels figured out how to _bend the metal_ and get at the seeds. None of these feeders lasts that long. We are going back to the simpler three-tube model.

Although a very attractive birdfeeder, don't expect much from this product despite the hefty price. Within 2 weeks of putting it out, one of the copper leaves fell off resulting in one of the feeder holes being exposed. The squirrels very quickly took advantage of the situation and have now ransacked and ruined the feeder. I called Woodstream, the manufacturer of this Perky Pet product, and they would not make good on the feeder - I'd owned it for just slightly over their 30 day warranty. What a waste of money! Bad feeder, bad warranty, bad experience, horrible customer service. Don't waste your time and money with this feeder.
