Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What criteria should I use when selecting a hummingbird feeder?
A. Make sure it is one that will be easy to clean and fill, especially since you will need to clean the feeder every few days. If you are worried about bees and wasps or ants invading the feeder, purchase a hummingbird feeder with bee guards.
Q. How do I clean my hummingbird feeders?
A. Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Use hot water and a bottle brush, along with mild soap; be sure to rinse thoroughly.
The Perky-Pet cleaning mop is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning hummingbird feeders, and is very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used on seed feeders and oriole feeders for those small, tight spaces that are difficult to reach.
Q. What is the importance of providing water for hummingbirds?
A. Hummingbirds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need nectar. Hummingbirds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide hummingbirds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for hummingbirds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy.

After unscrewing the bottle from the base, the two brass bottom pieces separate easily for easy cleaning. The directions recommend that the parts be hand washed twice a week and since that is how often I will be refilling, that makes perfect sense. The bottle opening is small so unless you have a very steady hand, you will need a funnel to fill the bottle.
The brass toned hanging piece has a narrow clearance so you may need to invest in an "s" hook if you are looking to hang it from a nail on the eaves of your house.
Overall, I am very impressed with this bird feeder, it is a nice addition to the backyard and not tacky like the usual red plastic feeders that you see.
For those reasons, a good hummingbird feeder is 1) attractive to hummingbirds, 2) easy to put up and take down, and 3) easy to clean. If it offers resistance to bees/wasps/ants, etc., all the better.
The Perky-Pet 8107-2 feeder is fair, rather than good. Placed in lieu of an older disc-style feeder, suspended from a tree branch near a flower bed, it did seem to attract a hummingbird, though no more or less so than the disc. (There is a variation of this feeder with red, rather than clear, glass, which might be better.) The glass bottle has a metal hook assembly attached to the top, which makes it easy enough to set up and take down, though the bottle won't stand on its own when inverted for filling. The bowl portion is not particularly easy to clean, however, and is made from thinner metal than would be ideal. After only the second reassembly, I had a little difficulty ensuring a watertight seal -- I may have warped the disc a bit when washing it.
Perky-pet is the General Motors of hummingbird feeders. This particular one serves its purpose, but it is not the Cadillac of the lineup.
I emailed PerkyPets directly about this problem, and they had no advice besides a canned email response.
Yes this looks pretty, but unless you resign yourself to tilting the bottle to break the suction daily, don't buy this defective product.
First of all, the PERKY-PET ANTIQUE BOTTLE HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER is very lovely. The chamber which hold the hummingbird food is made from a gorgeous antique glass bottle with an elegant embossed design on the glass. The base is copper, with little raised metal flowers surrounding the holes from which the hummingbirds feed. It is very easy to fill (and to clean!), and my daughter and I had it filled, assembled, and hanging in the yard in no time.
The only thing I would do to improve the PERKY-PET ANTIQUE BOTTLE HUMMINGBIRD FEEDER would be to include the formula for the hummingbird nectar in the package. But that is easily Googled, so not to worry. The hummingbirds seem to like the recipe we found, and my daughter is thrilled to see all the little birdies flying around.
