Frequently Asked Questions:

Q. What criteria should I use when selecting a hummingbird feeder?

A. Make sure it is one that will be easy to clean and fill, especially since you will need to clean the feeder every few days. If you are worried about bees and wasps or ants invading the feeder, purchase a hummingbird feeder with bee guards.

Q. How do I clean my hummingbird feeders?

A. Hummingbird feeders need to be cleaned every 1-2 weeks. Use hot water and a bottle brush, along with mild soap; be sure to rinse thoroughly.

The Perky-Pet cleaning mop is specifically designed for the purpose of cleaning hummingbird feeders, and is very convenient to use. This cleaning mop can also be used on seed feeders and oriole feeders for those small, tight spaces that are difficult to reach.

Q. What is the importance of providing water for hummingbirds?

A. Hummingbirds need fresh, clean water just as much as they need nectar. Hummingbirds stay healthy by using water not just for drinking, but also bathing, cleaning their feathers and to remove parasites. Waterers are better options than bird baths because they provide hummingbirds with fresh, clean water that prevents dirt and debris from contaminating it. In hotter climates or seasons, providing water for hummingbirds makes it easy for them to have access to a water source and retain their energy.

i was very happy to see such a good looking hummingbird feeder. couldnt wait to get to set this thing up because of its looks and capacity and ease of cleaning. then i found out after about 3 weeks of watching my hummers attempting to feed from it but in the end avoiding it. first i thought it was the color of the flowers white and yellow but after closer inspection, this base is made of galvanized metal and when u add ur nectar it will have a reaction with the galvanizing in the base making the nectar taste funny. everyone knows how sensitive hummers are to chemicals i am some what suprised that perky pet came out with this feeder with a galvanized base. my opinion the base would be better if painted, powder coated or even plastic. Update: contacted perky pet via email and phone and left this same review. also sent pictures of the chemical reaction from the nectar to the galvanizing. they didn't allow the review on there web sight and it seemed not to care about the problem. also i had as many as a dozen hummers coming to my two other feeders which i left in place. now i have only about 3 to 4 left. im not saying that this chemical reaction had anything to do with this but i still have MIA hummers. Update: 2-1-14... you can see on the comments that perky pet sounded like they were real concerned about the customer. well after speaking with them like 3 times they wanted me to send back the feeder so reluctantly i sent the feeder to perky pet incurring the shipping cost not to mention the time and effort to box it up and drive it to the local ups store and as i said ship it back to them. that was several months ago. i have yet to recrecive an email, an exchange, refund or much less a phone call. beware of perky pet. they could care less about the product they sell much less the customer...Read more ›

I have 7 feeders hanging on my back patio right now. The three most popular - and it DOES appear that hummers have preferences - are red plastic Humzingers. Two less popular are Perky-Pet green glass, but they do get some hummers. When my kids gave me this one, at least I thought that it's going to be easy to clean, but also had high hopes that it would do a brisk business.

I'm no expert regarding hummingbirds, but I've been feeding them for 13 years, and I know their peak periods when not nesting and during the fall and spring when real flowers aren't in bloom, and I swear that hummers are avoiding this feeder. I don't know if it's because the flowers are yellow, but I doubt it since that would mean they'd also avoid the green glass (I NEVER use nectar with food coloring). My only educated guess would be that the feeding holes or the metal around them has a taste that they don't like.

I just can't recommend THIS particular Perky-Pet.

Really this one deserves a - 10 rating. I have anywhere from 40 to 80 hummingbirds at a time - Have 6 of the large window mounts, and then 3 hummingbird feeders on a pole. I did have this one but they will not eat out of it. My husband even painted the base red thinking that would help. Still they will not eat out of it even when all the other feeders are empty. I don't know what it is about this feeder but believe me it's a waste of money. Very cute just if you want your hummingbirds to eat don't buy it!!

I had some experience earlier this year with attracting hummingbirds to a new feeder in the yard. I had installed the cobalt blue Perky Pet feeder near an existing red plastic feeder that we've had for years, and the birds wouldn't have anything to do with the new feeder. Finally, I removed the old feeder and they adopted the new feeder right away.

When I got this new Mason Jar feeder, I temporarily put away the cobalt blue feeder and put this one in its place. Though the hummers have been visiting, they don't stop by nearly as often as they did for the cobalt blue feeder. Several other reviewers expressed a concern that the oxidation process that is affecting the metal base that screws on to the glass jar might be giving an off-taste that the birds don't enjoy. The texture and color of the inside of the metal base has definitely changed, though I don't know whether it is affecting the taste or scent of the nectar.

I do like the form factor of the jar since the wide mouth is much easier to fill (you don't need to use a funnel as you do with other feeders), and the jar is easy to clean. I do not fill it completely since the nectar doesn't get consumed fast enough and I've read that the birds prefer fresh nectar.

I intend to bring back the cobalt blue feeder and install the Mason Jar feeder next to it as a further test of the birds' preferences. If I do note any differences, I will post an amendment to this review.

Edit approximately one month later: The hummers just don't visit this feeder often. The glass jar wasn't emptied in a week, so I dumped it out and put fresh nectar in each week. I brought the previous cobalt blue feeder back, and the hummers abandoned this new feeder altogether.

This large feeder is cute in a down-home, Mason jar kind of way. I like that is is very easy to clean and fill. (I hate those hard-to-clean feeders that get moldy in places that can't be reached, detrimental for the birds.) I change the food often so it doesn't spoil in hot weather, so I fill the feeder only part way, but it hasn't leaked so far.

Now for the negatives. The birds don't seem to like it. I've had it out long enough for the hummers to get used to it, but I see them fly to it and instead of eating out of it, fly to the other feeder I have, a glass one with a plastic base. The food is changed at the same time, so it isn't a matter of one being fresher than the other.

I had expected a high-quality metal, but I can't find any information about what kind of metal this one uses. It feels a little cheap. It has become a little splotchy inside where the feed is in constant contact with the metal. Perhaps this isn't good for the birds or perhaps it gives the food an off taste - I just don't know. At any rate, whether it is the taste of the food or the feel of the metal, the birds aren't using this one. A hummer feeder that the hummers don't like, cute or not, is pretty useless to me. Given the birds' reactions, I wouldn't get this one again.
