Book Description

May 15, 2001

Perl programmers increasingly rely on the Web, online help, and other online information sources to solve technical problems. Version 2.0 of O'Reilly's Perl CD Bookshelf gives you convenient online access to your favorite books from your CD-ROM drive.

This updated version of The Perl CD Bookshelf contains the third edition of Programming Perl; a new book, Perl for System Administration; and a powerhouse of other O'Reilly Animal Guides. You'll have access to the combined resources of complete, unabridged versions of Perl in a Nutshell, Perl Cookbook, and Advanced Perl Programming, along with the new books. As a bonus, we've enclosed the paperback version of Perl in a Nutshell.

Never has it been easier to learn, or look up, what you need to know online. Formatted in HTML, The Perl CD Bookshelf, Version 2.0, can be accessed with any web browser. The books are fully searchable and cross-referenced. In addition to individual indexes for each book, there is a master index for the entire library. With the CD Bookshelf, you get a complete Perl library that you can easily carry with you anywhere you need it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A carton of camels for all you addicts, June 18, 2001
By
Timothy Walker (Orlando, Florida USA) - See all my reviews
(VINE VOICE)    (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Perl CD Bookshelf 2.0 (Book & CD-ROM) (CD-ROM)
The CD Bookshelf series stands out as one of the best ideas in the history of IT book publishing - instead of forcing overcaffeinated geeks to flip through page after page of book after book to find the answers they need, why not put a complete library on a well-indexed CD-ROM and throw in a paper copy of the book they'll probably turn to first? O'Reilly, we thank you again.

The new Perl CD Bookshelf is an incredible resource for skilled and aspiring programmers. It includes Perl in a Nutshell in physical and electronic form, as well as the Camel book, the Cookbook, and two other titles on the CD. [Note to owners of the first edition: Learning on Win32 Systems is gone now. Further evidence of Tim's commitment to Open Source, I suppose.]

Bottom line: if you want to master Perl, and you want to own five five-star books for the price of two, then get this now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Linux Applet Trouble, June 22, 2001

This review is from: Perl CD Bookshelf 2.0 (Book & CD-ROM) (CD-ROM)
The Perl CD BookShelf is filled with all you need to go from a simple perl programmer to a perl guru. For those having trouble with the search engine applet on linux systems, O'Reilly has a fix to help you: ftp://ftp.ora.com/pub/perlcd/perl_search_files.tar.gz

Hope this helps, cheers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive Knowledge Repository, October 10, 2002

A long time fan of O'Reilly books, the CD bookshelves are one of the best ideas I've seen from a publisher. If you don't mind reading onscreen these will save you money. If you do pick this up in addition to the hardcopy simply for the search capabilities. A great reference tool from any serious programmer.
