5.0 out of 5 stars Uh-Hum, That's 35 Stars- 5 ea.+ 5 for price & convenience
If you are lucky enough to read this, BUY THE DARN THING. Seriously, five of the best PERL books at one low price with the ease & convenience of a search tool. Absolutely the fastest way to get what you need. I actually copied the CD onto my harddrive so I don't have to worry about taking in and out- it is always there.

Okay, Here's the plan. If you already...

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed to see MRE is PDF, not HTML

I am a happy owner of Versions 1 and 3 of Perl CD Bookshelf. I finally decided to purchase a copy of Version 4 in order to have access to Perl Cookbook 2nd edition, Learning Perl Objects, and Mastering Regular Expressions, 2nd edition (I already owned the first edition of MRE in hardcopy book form).

I was quite disappointed to find that MRE 2nd edition...

Okay, Here's the plan. If you already know some PERL, you should have already added it to your cart. If you don't, go buy "Perl & Cgi: The Visual Quickstart Guide". This will introduce you to the syntax, the architecture, and other basics. Then buy this CD/ Book and go visit several PERL web resources. You will be a PERL expert in no time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The only perl reference purchase necessary!, January 13, 2000

This review is from: The Perl CD Bookshelf: Perl in a Nutshell/Programming Perl, 2nd Edition/Perl Cookbook/Advanced Perl Programming/Learning Perl, 2nd Edition/Learning Perl on WIN32 Systems (Paperback)
I can't think of a better reference for Perl than this searchable wonderful collection of 6 books. Beginners, intermediate, and advanced users can greatly benefit from this purchase alone. If you prefer hard copies when researching a problem, you can print out sections too, so don't discount this just because it's in electronic format. This package just makes it easier to find what you want to have for hard copy.

I own hard copies of all the O'Reilly books, and the hard copy books are good for reading about a topic at length, but when I need to find out how to do something, I reach for this CD. The search feature is awesome. I quickly get a list of articles relevant to the task I need to do.

I can't recommend this CD enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed to see MRE is PDF, not HTML, June 20, 2005

I am a happy owner of Versions 1 and 3 of Perl CD Bookshelf. I finally decided to purchase a copy of Version 4 in order to have access to Perl Cookbook 2nd edition, Learning Perl Objects, and Mastering Regular Expressions, 2nd edition (I already owned the first edition of MRE in hardcopy book form).

I was quite disappointed to find that MRE 2nd edition is in PDF format, not HTML. This is a departure from every other book on these three editions of the Perl CD Bookshelf, and makes it significantly less useful, in my opinion.

One of the features I use extensively on the other CD's is the master index, with links to all books on the CD. The master index on Version 4 does not include any links to MRE 2nd edition. The search engine also does not include any capability to include MRE in its results.

I did not see any mention of this change in the promotional material about Version 4, making this loss feel like somewhat of a bait and switch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great tool for new and old Perl Programmers, November 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Perl CD Bookshelf: Perl in a Nutshell/Programming Perl, 2nd Edition/Perl Cookbook/Advanced Perl Programming/Learning Perl, 2nd Edition/Learning Perl on WIN32 Systems (Paperback)
Like many first time Perl programmers I bought the O'Reilly paperbacks: Learning Perl, Programming Perl, and Advanced Perl Programming. I stumbled upon this compilation CD while looking for the Perl Cookbook paperback and boy was I glad that I got the CD instead. The best things about the CD are: 1) You don't have to lug around all those books 2) You can search through all the books or individual books for examples and text 3) You can cut and paste code into your own programs and run it right away. 4)It's a lot cheaper than buying all the books. This is the CD to own if you are going to program in Perl.

5.0 out of 5 stars PCOLALUG GIVES two thumbs up!, March 31, 2004

O'reilly has done it again!

The PERL CD Bookshelf version 4.0 is what every Script writer, System Admin and Programmer needs to have in there
Library. It has a hardcopy of PERL in a nutshell 2nd edition and the following on the CD for your quick use.
PERL in a nutshell 2nd edition, Learning PERL 3rd edition, Mastering Regular Expressions 2nd edition, Programming PERL 3rd edition, PERL Cookbook 2nd edition, Learning PERL objects, references, and Modules, and a bonus section of related materials from O'reilly's Network, Boy what a find this is. I can honestly say this CD will replace all of my other PERL books and with the master search tool provided I can quickly find what I am looking for. I wish all tech books where like this. Also noted These materials also cover the newer PERL 5.8.

5.0 out of 5 stars Singing praises for awsome book, April 9, 2000
This review is from: The Perl CD Bookshelf: Perl in a Nutshell/Programming Perl, 2nd Edition/Perl Cookbook/Advanced Perl Programming/Learning Perl, 2nd Edition/Learning Perl on WIN32 Systems (Paperback)
This is the best Perl reference folks. Upon getting it I went from zero Perl programmer to intermediate one. It very easy to find what you are looking and just keep copying and pasting code into the code editor. The CD is replete with both references and excellent code samples. Comprare prego questo libro!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than paper, November 5, 2004

A programming book in paper can be good, but an electronic version is much better. The ability to search, copy-and-paste makes this bookshelf the best perl reference you can have. All the pages are HTML, so you could put it in your intranet to share it with colleagues. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars essential PERL, June 23, 2004

I already own a couple of the titles on this but thought it would be useful to have electronic search when looking up examples etc.

I don't think I have opened the paper books since I installed this. It sits right there on my desktop, examples are easily copied to an editor to be tried.

Extremely useful
