5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent - Highly Recommended
I found this book to be a great introduction to both Perl and CGI programming. This book is genuinely trying to teach you, unlike some books where the author is attempting to show you how clever he/she is. Also includes useful examples, and the syntax reference library in the appendix is essential once you are experienced with Perl & CGI. I am very pleased I...

3.0 out of 5 stars nothing on using dates and times in scripts
I found this book very uselful, but it doesn't cover using dates or times. I found that very disapointing. It also doesn't have anything about sending Form mail.

This book is genuinely trying to teach you, unlike some books where the author is attempting to show you how clever he/she is. Also includes useful examples, and the syntax reference library in the appendix is essential once you are experienced with Perl & CGI. I am very pleased I purchased this book and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to be up and running with Perl CGI programming in the shortest possible period.

4.0 out of 5 stars No fat, full of info., February 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
This book is very good as it not only teaches you how to write good CGI code for web pages but it also teaches you how to integrate your exisiting PERL scripts into it. I have had to contact Customer Support in regards to an error in the book and they advised me that the book was "designed for Windows 95". So they could not answer the question.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent tutorial for CGI/Perl, February 4, 1999
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
The book is excellent, but I noticed that one of the examples didn't work on my system(Win 98, Sambar Server, Perl 5). In chapter 2 and 3 it mentions and examines code that uses subroutines, but on my system it returned a false value from the subroutine and an error. To correct this put 1; directly below the entire subroutine 'sub name {subroutine code} 1;' Thanks to Amazon's Perl for Dummies for pointing out that workaround. I would recommend both books as complements of each other. Perl for Dummies describes in more detail with less example, and Perl CGI Programming has detailed examples with little explaination.

This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
If you want to learn perl, this book it's the best.. But if you want to train yourself programming CGI, this book it's the best too. Excellent documentation, with a lot of examples and screen shots. This book follows you to be an excellent programmer, also it contains instructions to how to install a web server on your machine. Great book. I recommend you this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive understanding CGI but on UNIX platform, August 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
If you try to write your first CGI script with Perl, this book is a good choice. But don't forget that the sample code snippets were written on UNIX platform. Some parts of them should be rewritten for Windows32 platform. There are no comments about it on the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall the best Beginner's CGI book I've read, July 16, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
Although I wasn't a beginner to HTML, I was to CGI and Perl. Working through all the example programs in this book, taught me enough to write my own Database Driven Web Site. I would definitely recomend it to anyone who's curious about Perl/CGI.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Balanced and Understandable, June 28, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
I read the book cover-to-cover before actually trying to write any of the scripts, and by the time I had done that, I only wrote a few (which worked perfectly) and then quickly moved on to completing my database/PERL project in a few hours!

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for !, May 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
explains how to write your own guestbooks and counters, and gives you a good understanding how things work. Experienced a few frustrating problems ( often my own mistakes ! ) But, would be handy if the book pointed out possible errors. Overall, well written, and clearly presented for someone who wants more than just HTML knowledge

4.0 out of 5 stars Modem with TCP/IP access required!!, March 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Perl Cgi Programming: No Experience Required (Paperback)
I followed the book, reading and following the examples. I downloaded Perl and a Sambar-server via my university-account. When installing the server on my PC (which should be an easy task according to the writer) I was thrilled...Unfortunately the server demands that you have a TCP/IP connection available - which I don't. I feel like I just waisted a lot of money. However the book has some interesting subjects, and I'm looking foreward to continuing my reading (when I eventually get a TCP/IP connection)...
