Book Description

September 1989
Stardust in L.A... Literary greats in San Francisco... Movie moguls and musicians, admirals and eccentrics, rogues and lawmen - all these "permanent" Californians are chronicled in piquant detail as Judi Culbertson and Tom Randall tour the most interesting cemeteries of Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as Carmel, Salinas, and San Diego. They provide 11 walking tour maps and 100 stunning photos of statuary; gravestones and mausoleums, gardens, and plaques with such goodbyes as "Too bad, we had fun". In the City of Angels, the authors cover the lives of such superstars as Marilyn Monroe, Rudolph Valentine, Lenny Bruce, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Rite Haworth, W.C. Fields, and Spencer Tracy. They even explore the lives and gravesites of such recent arrivals and Natalie Wood, John Huston, Groucho Marx, and the impeccably flamboyant Liberace. Indeed, the authors leave few stones unturned in their quest for Hollywood's celebrities. To the north, in San Francisco and environs, the authors encounter William Randolph Hearst, Wyatt Earp, Levi Strauss, Frank Norris, and many more. They tour the homes of Luther Burbank, John Muir, and Jack London. The history of California, and its two cultures is uniquely revealed in these witty, memorializing pages... Permanent Californians is Culbertson and Randall's third book on the cemeteries of the world's great cities.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Another in the series that includes Permanent New Yorkers ( LJ 10/15/87) and Permanent Parisians ( LJ 6/15/86). LJ' s reviewer said the first volume was "as much fun to browse as the cemeteries themselves." This edition presents the final resting places of such Hollywood notables as Humphrey Bogart, John Huston, and the one, the only, Groucho.-- MR

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't believe everything you read..., March 16, 1999

This review is from: Permanent Californians: An Illustrated Guide to the Cemeteries of California (Paperback)
I've been using Permanent Californians for roughly 7 years now;while it provides great biographical information and a decent basicguide to who has been interred where, Culbertson and Randall have failed miserably in their efforts to provide specific gravesite locations. I have wasted too much precious daylight in vain assessments of which tree they presume to be the largest within a particular cemetery section, ultimately searching around each and every tree in said section only to conclude that the book is just plain wrong. I've noted many typos with regard to section numbers/grave numbers, and had to learn the hard way *never* to trust their directions as gospel truth. Very useful as a basic reference, but be advised: don't expect much in the way of orienteering.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good resource for grave hunters, June 1, 1998

I loved Permanent Californians! Unfortunately, it is out of date (1989). It also doesnt have all the celebrities but it gets you around the Calfornia cemeteries and gives you an interesting history!! I would highly recommend this book to all gravehunters!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars did NOT exceed my expectations!, November 14, 2001

I do not normally pick up a book and hate it at first sight, but so it was with this one. At first I felt there must be something wrong with me, and tried reading it again. However, I feel obliged to say that at times the discriptions and explanations were long-winded, and his attempts at analysis were not particularly original.
