Book Description

0873896327 978-0873896320 October 30, 2004
When a successful organization experiences a problem, it will use root-cause analysis to determine why the problem happened, and identify the steps need to correct and ultimately prevent it from happening again. You cannot fix it until you know where it is broken, but you cannot find out what is broken until you ask the right questions. But within the American education system, the prevailing attitude is to say ‘that’s just how the system works,’ or to issue a general blame to the bureaucrats in Washington and the state capitol. Many people see that it is wrong, but few are asking the right questions to figure out why.

Best-selling author Lee Jenkins has spent his entire career working in and with schools, beginning as a teacher, principal, superintendent, and now a consultant helping schools tackle difficult problems. Jenkins believes that the problem with the American school system lies with the poor management system in place at all levels, including the classroom, school, and district. In Permission to Forget, Jenkins has identified ten critical root-cause problems and offers concise solutions to help change them. This book is the companion for Jenkins’ best-selling guide Improving Student Learning which provides in-depth answers to these ten problems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book with a fresh perspective, May 8, 2007

This review is from: Permission to Forget: And Nine Other Root Causes of America's Frustration with Education (Paperback)
Dr. Jenkins does a great job of pointing out many counter-productive practices of educators. Jenkin's idea that improvement will come simply by discontinuing these practices is enlightening. His emphasis on identifying the root causes of educational frustration will help educators address and fix the problems occurring in schools, instead of treating symptoms. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in improving their classroom practices, climate, student motivation and student-teacher relationships!

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical Reform, December 23, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Permission to Forget: And Nine Other Root Causes of America's Frustration with Education (Paperback)
It has often been stated that there is nothing "new" in the field of education reform. Whether or not that statement is true, in the case of "Permission to Forget", Lee Jenkins explores the underlying causes of the problems with our educational system and offers a systemic approach to those we can address.
This book does not offer a "magic bullet" that will cure all of our educational ills, but rather a practical approach to addressing those we can have control over. We may have to deal with such problems as pendulum swings and administrators who lead by personality or force instead of knowledge, but we can - with a list of information, a number cube, some shoe boxes and charts - address the age-old problem of students forgetting what we educators have worked so hard to teach them.
