Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

German author/artist Wiesmuller conjures up a dino-eat-dino world in this strikingly illustrated picture book. Pernix, a small dinosaur, wanders hungrily through the primeval forest looking for food, is taunted by a trio of flying dinosaurs and risks being eaten by a crocodile and stampeded by an unimaginably large behemoth. He also finds a mate and fathers five baby dinosaurs. Stunning artwork, with the look of a lushly animated film, gives the book immediacy. Amid all the rich greenery, the prehistoric creatures seem ready to jump into action at a moment's notice. Huge trees and snarling beasts induce a real sense of the ever-present danger, while the endearing, almost cartoony look of Pernix and his kin keeps everything safely within the context of a children's book. Ages 7-11.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Like John Horner and James Gorman's Maia (Running, 1989) and Jim Murphy's Dinosaur for a Day (Scholastic, 1992), this book follows the life of a small dinosaur from infancy through adulthood, and the birth of his own offspring. The lively story describes Pernix's search for a companion; his torment at the hands of and subsequent revenge against three bully pterodactyls; and his constant battle to acquire, rather than become, food. The big, lush illustrations create the arboreal atmosphere of a rainforest, dense with wet leaves, mossy smells, and filtered sunlight. In the beginning of the book, little Pernix survives on his own. Later, when he and his mate have their own babies, they are extremely attentive parents. Such anthropomorphizing may seem to contradict logic. Then again, this is a story about talking dinos who experience a wide range of human emotions. Its message-"Even in this gigantic ancient forest, it is better not be alone, no matter how big or how small you are" is a satisfying one.

4.0 out of 5 stars For the Dino Lover, October 26, 2002

This review is from: Pernix: 9The Adventures of a Small Dinosaur (Hardcover)
My 5-year old son likes this book. You truly have to love dinosaurs to appreciate the story. The illustrations are nicely done and depicts the characters in the book.

Pernix and Viva are small dinosaurs struggling to survive in a world dominated by bigger dinosaurs. The two dinosaurs make a secure nest together, defend their new hatchlings from predators, and eventually learn to appreciate their small size (as long as they have each other).
