"Play yourself!",
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Perolas (Audio CD)
Jazz great Lester Young when asked his secret to Jazz greatness said, "play yourself!" Brasil's treasure to the world of Elis Regina has often been compared to Edith Piaf. O.K. Both were pixie like women and Piaf spoke French, Regina Portuguese but Portuguese ain't nothing but Spanish spoken with a French accent. You could just as easily compare Reginas uncanny jazz chops to Peggy Lee, her lovely voice to Ella Fitzgerald, her little girl breathy cirliques to Blossom Dearie or Marilyn Monroe! Her tremendous raport with her fans to Judy Garland's emotional connection to her audience. Or go completely wacky and listen to Elis who at times sounds like Grace Slick or Carly Simon. But let us just calm down and realize that God sometimes reaches down and touches a voice, like Nat King Cole, the gifted voice was given to Elis. She did play herself and was an incomparable original who sounds only like herself. And I recommend this album of "Pearles' [Perolas]. You can't go wrong on any of the many compilations around and this one has some great ballads and blues.
