Progressive/gothic/death/doom/you name it metal,
By
This review is from: Perpetual Motion (Audio CD)
2005's The Perpetual Motion is the second album from progressive/death/doom metal band The Old Dead Tree. The band, which comes from France of all places, has an interesting mix of metal styles. It's somber and atmospheric, progressive and technical, and has both melody and aggression. I like the combination of clean and growled vocals, and the fact that both styles sound completely somber and melancholy. The Perpetual Motion is a concept album, with a pair of multi-song "suites", but I haven't studied the lyrics enough to really understand the concept. I'm guessing it's something grim though!
The Old Dead Tree is a band that a lot of metal fans overlooked. If you're into the more innovative, genre-crossing bands like Opeth, Agalloch and Novembers Doom, you'd do well to check out some Old Dead Tree, especially now that Amazon is listing both The Perpetual Motion and 2003's Nameless Disease at cut-out prices. |
