5.0 out of 5 stars This is worth $40+ but, don't pay that !
This is a wonderful record ! It's not a huge departure from Rasputina. There is a little more emphasis on the dulcimer (that she started using on "Frustration Plantation").Her re-make of Tom Petty's "American Girl" (which you may remember being prominently featured in "Silence of the Lambs")is excellent. You can buy this for $12 @ Rasputina shows. You can also get it @...

3.0 out of 5 stars oh perilous world leftovers
This album sounds like the leftovers that didn't make it to "oh perilous world". It is very good, but short and doesn't really stand on its own. If you're a fan of Rasputina, definitely pick it up- it will fit right in.

4.0 out of 5 stars Melora goes solo....! Or does she....?, December 18, 2007
This review is from: Perplexions (Audio CD)
I'm a huge Rasputina fan and I wanted to pick up this solo CD to see what Melora would do on her own.

Honestly, it's not entirely different from Rasputina, as she is the front woman and founder of the group, though I will say I still enjoy it very much. The tracks range from very clear, structured pieces ("Girl Lunar Explorer", "War Bots"), to more musically layered, chaotic-sounding pieces ("Sky Is Falling", "Krakatowa"). She really puts a lot of dulcimer into the tracks, which I love... and "Border Village" is your usual silly, mysterious, Rasputina-esque dialogue track with some nice background music to set the mood.

The Tom Petty cover, "American Girl," is a spectacular take, as most Rasputina/Melora Creager covers tend to be.

If you're just becoming interested in Rasputina, I would recommend one of their albums first, like "How We Quit The Forest" or "Cabin Fever." Save this CD for later, unless you're open and willing to hear some crazy sounding stuff. For those who are more familiar with their work, this is definitely a nice addition to the collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound Quality, August 6, 2009
This review is from: Perplexions (Audio CD)
This is a review of the sound quality only, not the music.

Being as this isn't a classical or jazz disk I was hesitent to buy it because most current non-jazz non-classical disks suffer from the 'loudness war' stuff (google it if you don't know what it is). I am glad to say though that there is no clipping, distortion, or mega dynamic range compression on this disk. The instruments are all crystal clear and there are lots of dynamics. It's so nice to hear a disk that hasn't had the rms (average) volume mercilessly pushed near the peak volume. Excellent job from the production team.

5.0 out of 5 stars Grrreat, November 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Perplexions (Audio CD)
I have been an avid Rasputina fan as of the year '98. I always look forward to the release of a new piece of music, but sadly, in this new world, music stores are closing. It becomes increasingly difficult to find an artist you are looking for. I am the old fashioned type that likes to hold the finished product, look over the thank you(s)/lyrics and see the effort. I am impressed at the quality of the disc even though I purchased it on-line. It was in immaculate shape, although the music its self was not what I had anticipated. Thank you for the great find. No complaints.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fab-U-Lo, May 14, 2007
This review is from: Perplexions (Audio CD)
Wonderful cd. If you like Rasputina you will also like Melora's solo stuff which Rasputina technically is since she writes the songs, does most of the vocals and makes all the decisions on the cd artwork and website. Beware - this cd only has 7 songs! Although a good cd it's not even worth paying $27 new/used.
