It's all a matter of what choices we make.,
By MotherLodeBeth "MotherLodeBeth" (Sierras of California) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
The reason the book interested me was because of his appearance on my local PBS station. While I agree that his menus, supplements etc may be out of reach for a few people, many are well within the budget of someone who knows how to budget well and is willing to learn how to eat healthy.
His simple suggestions to stop drinking coffee in the morning and drink green or black tea instead is something most people can do. Cannot afford Pacific salmon like I can? Then use the flax seed oil like he recommends. I also use flax seed oil. And who cannot afford to buy fresh or frozen blueberries? One bag of frozen blueberries is less than four dollars and will last you a whole week since one serving is only 1/3 cup. A can of salmon which he says you can substitute if fresh isn't available or is to expensive for those living in the mid-west. One average size salmon fillet where I live is around 8 oz, which cut in half will make two meals. Most people need only delete the junk food and invest in the good foods he recommends. Most people can afford to plant a few fresh vegetables in their yards or amongst the flower gardens, so that's something he also encourages. As for some of the pricier items he suggests, I tend to think most Americans with well stocked and affordable health or whole food stores, can budget wisely and buy many of the items he suggests. Look at his average breakfast which costs very little if you look at the amount needed. 3 egg omelet and/or 4-6 oz. grilled salmon, 1/2 cup cooked non-instant oatmeal, 1/3 cup fresh berries or small slice of melon. Green tea. 8-12 oz. spring water per meal. For lunch he suggests something more salmon and a small 2 cup serving of a dark green lettuce salad with extra virgin olive oil and fresh squeezed lemon to taste, and 1/3 cup serving of fresh fruit. For snacks he suggests Small handful of hazelnuts, walnuts or almonds or an apple. For dinner he suggests fish, another small sald and additional vegetables like 1/2 cup steamed asparagus, broccoli, or spinach, and 1/3 cup berries or melon and water. He does allow an apple or nuts etc as a bedtime snack, but I dont eat anything three hours before bedtime. Look at how much the average family spends on Pepsi, Coke and other soft drinks per month, yet a good water filter like the Brita faucet mount available via Amazon.com can give you a better beverage, good clean water, which will heal and vitalize your body for of what one six pack of sodas cost you in one month. It's all a matter of what choices we make. And even he says that even if you follow only one part of his program you should be healthier. All I need do is look at how much the choices he suggests will save me in medical costs (co-pays) over the year and it's well worth it. And I am walking proof that some simple changes like drinking water throughout the day, getting enough sleep, walking more, eating smaller meals, and having a more positive attitude can help you have better skin and loose weight and keep it off. And I have continued to do this, even after my husband died fourteen months ago, thanks to a drunk driver.

A fantastic book! However...,
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
I was quite saddened to see that I am going to have to sell my house and personal belongings to afford the face creams and supplements he recommends. On a positive note, I have done the diet part of the book for 2 days now, and must say my energy has skyrocketed! I actually jumped out of bed this morning, and usually I hit snooze 3-4 times.
The book itself is well-written, but it is not riveting. It is quite scientific. If the information wasn't so amazing, I would have put it down right away. I love most of his tips. Eat lots of authentic foods, eat protein first at each meal, and use herbs LIBERALLY. The book says NOT to eat fat-free anything (I just about lived on expensive diet food products before). It was liberating to shop for fresh, whole foods this week. Thank you Dr. Perricone, you have written a great book, now please come up with a cream that the masses (Oprah excluded) can afford!

Got cash?????,
By Carolyn Rampone "Carolyn D'Amico Rampone" (Plantation, FL USA) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
"The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps " leaves out one, very important step. The requirement to be independently wealthy or having just won the lottery. When an author sells his book for $20.00 and then reveals inside that you will need items totaling over $1400.00 more to reap the full benefits, he's assuming people are gullible and desperate. Going by Amazon ranking this the #2 book in sales, he may be right.
There is nothing in this book you won't find in a copy of Prevention magazine except for the referral to his website to buy his over priced products. As I've said before, lean proteins, lots of fruits and vegetables, and plenty of water will do the trick for most of us. I would discourage anyone from eating the amounts of salmon called for by the program unless you're sure your liver can handle the abundance of toxins it will now have to process. I hear there is a great liver cleansing diet out there, just in case. I bought "The Perricone Promise" and read it with high hopes after seeing Dr. Nicholas Perricone on a talk show. It sounded good but I quickly realized it wasn't anything that was workable for the average consumer. Really!! the prices of these magical creams are outrageous and he won't guarantee the results without them. As an example, he sells a bottle of "N.V. Perricone Neuropeptide Facial Conformer" on Amazon for $570.00. This item promises to reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin's appearance. I marched my copy back to Barnes and Noble and promptly got a refund.

Science or not, my skin is luminous,
By
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
I've read the book, and three days ago, I implemented many of its recommendations - starting with cutting an abundance of sugar out of my diet, eating Alaskan salmon, and almonds for snacks. I have also read criticisms of Perricone in the New York Times and other periodicals. The bottom line is that - science or not - my skin is glowing and smooth in a way I have never experienced without applying shimmering lotions or creams. (I have cronic dry skin.) Yesterday, I didn't have to apply concealor to cover undereye circles for the first time in years.
I don't know if it is the green tea, water, olive oil, eating berries, lack of sugar or what. But something is working. And I'm not taking his supplements or using his creams. I am simply paying attention to what I eat, and spending a bit more at the grocery store and when I go out to eat to make healthier choices. Part of the review complaints is the expense of the food. I admit - I am a bit irritated that he is pushing his own expensive supplements and skin products as part of the regimen. But as for the complaints about food - have we really come down to this point in America, where we are willing to spend $250 on the latest ipod but not an extra 5 dollars a day to eat healthier food? Have we become so spoiled in this country by the $5 sugar filled value meal at McDonalds, that we are aghast that nutricious food should cost us more?? I have been guilty of this, too, but this book has me rethinking my priorities.

not practical,
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
I enjoyed reading Dr. Perricone's scientific research and the basis for his recommendations. However, I would say that 90% of the recommendations are not practical for the average person. Many of the foods and supplements he recommends are hard to find and/or expensive. Of course, he is promoting his own formulations of supplements and topical creams. I felt like I was reading the words of TV infomercial. As far as his diet...cut out the sugar and caffeine and eat more richly colored fruit and veggies and as much Alaskan salmon as you can tolerate. There! now you don't need to buy the book.

Feel Better Within Days,
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
An easy to follow guide to feeling years younger (literally within just a few days). And yes, the healthy feeling shows! Energy levels increase, and friends and colleagues notice a difference. The food is delicious and drinking green tea (I bought some wonderful tea from goldenmoontea.com) brings energy without the jitters of coffee. This is not just another diet fad. It is well-balanced good sense for a longer life.

Perricone Delivers on His Promise,
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
I got an advanced copy of this book because my friend works for WarnerBooks, and he knew I was a fan of Dr. Perricone. Before I opened the book, I was skeptical... thinking it couldn't have anything more useful than The Perricone Prescription, which was great.
However, I was mistaken. It has a lot more useful instructions on how to eat - when to eat - what to eat, and how to follow Dr. Perricone's program. I am on day 4 of the 28 day program outlined in the back of the book, and I already feel 5 years younger - I can't wait to see how I feel in 3 1/2 weeks! The recipes he recommends are delicious and I don't ever feel hungry. This book itself is an easy read - the last sections are all outlines of the diet and recipes, so you can read the contents before that pretty quickly. I recommend this to anyone who is over 30 and thinking about trying a diet like south beach - Dr. Perricone follows a lot of the same principals, but the added benefit is you will look younger, too. So, if you want to only get skinny, go on atkins or south beach. If you want to lose weight and not look old, too, read and follow the program in the perricone promise.

I like Perricone's Approach,
By solomon (canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
I like the works of Dr. Perricone. He presents health information in a readable and beautifully presented book that outlines his approach to health and beauty.
I disagree with the potshots at Perricone's character by other reviewers. The diet he presents in his books is fairly straightforward: Ditch the processed foods, mainly the high-carb, flour, sugar and starchy foods, and build your health through top quality proteins like wild Salmon, lots of colorful vegetables, berries, and other fruits, and some legumes and nuts, seeds, and whole grains. Drink clean water, and tea. There you have it. What's the controversy for??? This is what good nutrition is about. Do you really need a mountain of clinical proof to convince you that eating these high nutrient foods will positively affect your well being??? Perricone aims for high qualtiy in the diet and lifestyle he presents. I like his approach, which is very sensible, because he motivates change through positive , visual results. He is a DERMATOLOGIST, so obviously he is going to aim at outward beauty of the skin, as a window to inward health. If you can see the results of your healthly lifestyle outwardly, you will be more motivated to keep it up.If you are told to eat for heart- health or for the health of your liver, well you can't see your internal organs, just eating for HEALTH is an ABSTRACT concept.Perricone takes a holistic aprroach that begins on the inside, dealing with overall health and then let's you SEE it's results in your face, your lips, eyelids, cheekbones, etc. We all want to look good, and good health results in good skin. This is a valid approach. Our health reflects in our skin. When you feel sick, people SEE it-they say, "hey you look PALE". It's true that SOME of the ingredients and foods for his recipies may be harder to find, but this is supposed to be a lifestyle. He provides resources for some of the products, and with the internet there is no reason you can't find something and order it. Sure, it takes a little effort, and a little more money, but if you make some changes to your lifestyle, you can reallocate time and money into getting high qualtiy foods, and products, and you will gain long term benefits. It's all about a trade off. Just ditching that box of process cereal and other packaged processed foods, a case of soft drinks, and ending your trips to the fast food joints would be enough to save you money so you could reallocate your funds to quality foods, and supplements. Of course you don't have to buy all the supplements, and facial creams. you can pick and choose. Most people are already spending money on a couple of different vitamins and other supplemts. Why settle for mediocrity when you can be the best, and look the best you can? Try his apporoach and see the results.

Saved me money and surgery,
By EllenD (Beaverton) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Perricone Promise: Look Younger, Live Longer in Three Easy Steps (Hardcover)
If you are looking for a magic (and cheap) pill to solve all your problems, you will never be satisfied. I think it's funny when I read all the reviews for this book that complain how expensive Dr. Perricone's products are. First of all, if you read the book you will see that he stresses a healthy lifestyle and presents a very do-able diet that will work wonders by itself. The foods he suggests are reduce inflammation and are high in antioxidants, and will make you healthier on the inside, which will show on the outside (A.K.A. your skin).
The products he suggests include supplements and facial creams to help tighten wrinkles on your skin and even out discolorations and such. I actually just tried the diet alone first, and saw dramatic improvements in my skin, so I then tried the products and it got even better! The best part is that I was going to have plastic surgery, but put it on hold to see what dr. perricone's program could do for me.... now, I don't need surgery! I saved $20,000!!! And nobody stuck any needles in my eye to paralyze my muscles the way botox does - stay away from botox! Buy this book if you want to feel and look better, if you can stick to the diet and don't expect anything for free. |
