4.0 out of 5 stars A Mixed Bag of Greatest Hits
This compilation also includes Perry's 1957 hit record "Round and Round" mistakenly excluded here. 1.0 out of 5 stars Perry Como was a sub par singer!
I was disappointed with this album. Being a huge Martin / Sinatra fan, I was told I would enjoy Como by a friend. Unfortunately, the man could not sing. His voice cracks and cracks, no flow, nothing. PS The arrangements to most songs are even worse. SAVE YOUR MONEY FOR DEAN AND FRANK!

This compilation also includes Perry's 1957 hit record "Round and Round" mistakenly excluded here. This is an early 1988 compilation and it's another one of those jumbled up collections having no particular sense. The classic collection is still Perry's 1958 album "Como's Golden Records" which was released on CD a few years after this one. To call this set Perry's "All Time Greatest Hits" is certainly a misnomer but no less foolish than other attempts to do the same thing. BMG should focus on a theme and do it well, the 40s, the 50s, the 60s etc., or even the 70s from which one out of context song is included here. Perry's fans cover a wide range and the selection here is random at best and disjointed at the worst. The technical quality of these recordings is OK but nothing special and nothing rare! It took a third party, Time-Life Music, to release Perry's recording of "Catch a Falling Star" in stereo for the first time as many of his other greatest hits have yet to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Como Sampler, April 24, 2000

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: "Perry Como - All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" (Audio CD)
Larry Bird is sometimes called basketball's all-time greatest "pure shooter". In that spirit, I would call Perry Como pop music's greatest "pure singer". This compilation contains most of his big hits from the 1950's. It was during that period that Como recorded a wide variety of songs from the beautiful "No Other Love" to "Papa Loves Mambo", which are included on this CD. He seemed to want to prove that his smooth, relaxed style could adapt even to such songs as "Ko-Ko-Mo", and he pretty well succeeded. Unfortunately, the CD does not include other great songs of the period, such as, "All At Once You Love Her", "And I Love You So", and "Wild Horses". Nor does it include very many of his earlier hits.

If you want some of his very best, this is a great buy. I believe, however, that his new double CD with 44 of his hits will turn out to be a better buy. I do not have that as yet, but I know the songs and that would be my choice. As it is, I will buy the new album and get repeats.

Perry Como - All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1 gives us some of Perry Como's greatest hits--and this CD also works as a great sampler of his incredible vocal talents. The artwork is grand and the quality of the sound couldn't be better!

"Round And Round" features Perry at his best; his voice is very strong and full of warmth. The backup chorus enhances the melody but make no mistake about it--this is Perry's song and Perry's song only! The whole number is gorgeous. "Hot Diggity (Dog Ziggity Boom)" was a pop number that Perry recorded to please the people who wanted such a number; Perry far preferred to record ballads like "It's Impossible." I applaud his willingness to go along with the flow!

"Catch A Falling Star" features Perry front and center--and that's great! Perry sings this flawlessly and the melody gets a fine arrangement for the piano, too. "Magic Moments" is a fine example of Perry delivering a peppy tune with panache; he handles the tempo changes effortlessly and I love every minute of it!

"Don't Let The Stars Get In Your Eyes" has a big band arrangement that works wonders for this ballad; the brass really shines! Perry sings this with heart and soul; and just one listen proves it. "Wanted" is a beautiful love ballad that features Perry crooning like no other singer ever could; and this impresses me greatly. "It's Impossible" comes from Perry's later years in show business; but you'd never know it--he sings this with all the energy of a man half his age! "It's Impossible" is one of my favorite songs--ever.

"Some Enchanted Evening" comes from South Pacific; and Perry does great justice to this fine ballad. Perry sings this without a superfluous note and it all works wonders. "Some Enchanted Evening" is clearly a major highlight of this album. "Temptation" is an earlier ballad and Perry again aces this effortlessly. This tune sounds fresh and new even today when Perry takes it in his capable hands.

The album also ends well with Perry Como performing "Dream On Little Dreamer." Perry sings this flawlessly and it's great to hear it. Perry also gets some help from the wonderful Anita Kerr Quartet.

Overall, this is one album Perry Como fans will want; and people who enjoy classic pop vocals will treasure this album for years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perry has the greatest voice ever to sing a tune., August 24, 1999
This review is from: "Perry Como - All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" (Audio CD)
Perry Como is the greatest singer ever. Ever. I am a mere twenty years of age, but after hearing "Round and Round" for the first time, I was completely addicted. It is really something to be able to go back to a time when music was fun, and not angry, sad, or frustrated. And Perry Como had a voice which, I am sure, would have made the angels in heaven a bit jealous. I believe that anyone, and everyone; no matter what the musical taste, would enjoy this CD. Buy it now!!

This man's voice just calms the nerves and gives a new meaning to life itself. His warmth and love surround you until you're totally engrossed in a dream of peace and tranquility. The man is sincere in anything he does and it comes thru in this album quite clearly. Can't wait for vol 2! I have all his recordings since the early 40's (yes, they are breakable and pretty scratchy now (78's) that's why I appreciate this album or cd so much.I can now dream along with Mr. Nice Guy once again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classics of Como, December 17, 2005
This review is from: "Perry Como - All-Time Greatest Hits, Vol. 1" (Audio CD)
This is a collection of Perry Como's songs. It is not a full collection but certainly will cover more than just the basics of this man's singing career. The songs are ones recorded as early as 1945 and as late as 1970. My personal favorites are "It's Impossible" and "Hot Digity" and "Papa Loves Mambo." Early in my freshman year in college, one of my friends heard "Papa Loves Mambo" from this CD and enjoyed it so much, he blasted it out of his dorm room as most blast rap music. How about that? Perry Como being played loudly and proudly in a Freshman College dormitory in the fall of 2005? RIP Perry Como, you were a huge inspiration to all for whom you have sung.

This is great music. Cheerful, happy, mellow, soulful. I bought it for my 91yo mother and I've already borrowed it to listen myself. I remember watching the Perry Como show when I was little and have always been a fan. Now my youngest niece heard it and has declared she likes Perry Como too. Like good old fashioned rock and roll, this music is wonderful and timeless.
