For the ardent fans (and latent newcomers) of PERRY MASON, this series was one of the few shows to demonstrate strong scripting and acting talent, which accounted for its tremendous success and longevity during it's nine year run. For it's time, the show was televisions most successful and longest running lawyer series.

The base-line formula for the show was simple:
Perry's client is charged with murder, but (in the second-half courtroom setting) Perry establishes his client's innocence by dramatically demonstrating the guilt of another character. For collector's of this excellent courtroom drama, we are only four volumes away from completing the entire series, and on October 23, 2012 we are being gifted with yet another four disc set. Here is what we will have to look forward to with this release:

The special guest stars will include:

Ryan O'Neil, Paul Winchell, Barry Atwater, Les Tremayne, Jeanne Cooper, David McCallum, Jackie Coogan, Tom Greenway, Arthur Franz, Stacy Keach Sr., Richard Devon,
Mala Powers, Holly McIntire, Sue Randall, Jacques Aubuchon, Jerry Van Dyke, Victor Buono, Malachi Throne, Douglas Lambert, Rebecca Welles, Jena Engstrom, Peter Hobbs,
Mimsy Farmer, Mark Slade, Malcolm Atterbury, Constance Towers, and many many more!

The episode list for this four disc set is as follows:

1. THE CASE OF THE ICE-COLD HANDS - A woman wants Perry to cash a bundle of winning racing tickets for her. There's only one problem: her former employer claims the racing tickets as his own. She's then charged with the ex-employers murder.
2. THE CASE OF THE BOUNTIFUL BEAUTY - Deborah Dearbourne is a 20 year old novelist who has unknowingly written a novel on her ex-boyfriend's stepmother. Although John Carew warns her, his stepmother finds Deborah and threatens to sue her. Real trouble strikes when the stepmother is found murdered and Deborah must turn to Perry Mason for help.
3. THE CASE OF THE NERVOUS NEIGHBOR - Mason's first client in this one is an amnesia victim accused of the murder of her husband. His second is her son who's accused of the murder of a blackmailing neighbor.
4. THE CASE OF THE FIFTY-MILLIONTH FRENCHMAN - Phillipe Bertain begins giving money to an old lady love from his home town. She says it's because she wants enough money to leave her abusive husband, but in reality it's all a scam for cash. When the husband is poisoned to death, Phillipe gets charged with the crime.
5. THE CASE OF THE FRIGHTENED FISHERMAN - Charged with the murder of his estranged wife, Randolph James claims he was fishing at the time of her death, but nobody can find the fisherman to substantiate his story.
6. THE CASE OF THE ARROGANT ARSONIST - A former fire chief wants Perry to bring a libel suit against a reporter who accused him of burning down his own warehouse. Instead of libel, Perry ends up defending the chief on a murder charge.
7. THE CASE OF THE GARRULOUS GO-BETWEEN - A fortune teller's predictions begin coming true with deadly accuracy for a woman when she goes on trial for murder.
8. THE CASE OF THE WOEFUL WIDOWER - Perry gets a call from a frantic housekeeper named Nellie Conway who thinks her employer is plotting to murder his wife.
9. THE CASE OF THE SIMPLE SIMON - Murder is the end result when actress Ramona Carver is confronted by a man claiming to be her son.
10. THE CASE OF THE ILLICIT ILLUSION - Mason is hired by a woman after a series of bizarre events convince the woman that she's going crazy.
11. THE CASE OF THE ANTIC ANGEL - Recovering alcoholic William Sherwood starts hitting the bottle again after seeing his wife, whose supposedly been dead for five years. When she turns up dead for real, Sherwood is arrested for her murder.
12. THE CASE OF THE CARELESS KIDNAPPER - A phony kidnapping note gets into the wrong hands and murder is the end result.
13. THE CASE OF THE DRIFTING DROP OUT - Dropout Barry Davis is accused of bashing small town junk dealer/mayoral candidate Mort Lynch's head in with a monkey wrench.
14. THE CASE OF THE TANDEM TARGET - Con Bolton is accused of murdering his fiancee's stepfather when witnesses say they saw him fooling around with the brakes before the stepfather perished in an accident.
15. THE CASE OF THE UGLY DUCKLING - Under the term's of her father's will, the unattractive Alice Trilling must marry within one year in order to inherit ownership of the old man's company. Next thing she knows, Alice is being charged with a murder for which she herself believes she's guilty.

Closed Captioning will be included for the hearing impaired.

Great classic courtroom drama!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed December 17, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
As an avid Perry Mason fan, I have collected seasons one through seven. I am not purchasing seasons eight and nine. The stories in season seven, especially the second volume, are often too complicated, too histrionic, and too grim. No one in the cast except the Paul Drake character is having any fun. Some stories do not have the Della Street character which really hurts the overall feel of the shows. Raymond Burr is clearly not enjoying it and has lost the "spring in his step" and his voice. I understand we all get older! And I understand the "times they were a changin'" by season seven. Still, I'm going to continue enjoying seasons one through six which still had a sense of humor and stories that made sense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent video quality September 8, 2012

This review is for the whole set through session 7 disk 1: I am rather amazed at how well these DVDs look on my 55 in Sony screen. With the exception of a very few scenes on disk one of season one, the video quality is much better than it was when broadcast. Contrast and grays are so good that I can almost forget I'm watching black and white TV! The sound is full - as in dynamic range, but mono of course.

As for the content: You either like to watch these old shows or you don't. The formula from show to show is exactly the same and can be tiring after a couple hundred shows, but I like watching anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars How many seasons?
Perry Mason is the all time great TV "Court Room" series (although Matlock came close). It is in black and white and this does not effect the story at all.

One episode, The Case Of The Twice Told Twist, from the original CBS series, Perry Mason, was filmed in color, and broadcast on 2/27/66, as episode #262 of 271. It should appear on the DVD release of season 9, volume two, disc two, show two. The 30 Perry Mason Mystery Movies (NBC 1985-1994) were... Read more
