Editorial Reviews

Nelson Pressley, Washington Post March 16 2001

’Perseus Bayou’ is a triumph of atmosphere and theatrical imagination.

Product Description

The full-cast soundtrack of the hit musical for families. The Greek myth of Perseus set in the chaotic world of post-Civil War Louisiana. To save the Bayou and his Maman, Percy must journey into the dark heart of the swamp to find the snake-headed Medusa and defeat the evil Polydectes. A classic tale of supernatural adventures, romance and heroic deeds. Cajun music plus lots of alligators. C'est bien!

5.0 out of 5 stars Perseus Bayou C'est Bien!, May 8, 2002
By

This review is from: Perseus Bayou: The Search for the Cajun Medusa (Audio CD)
C'est Bien!!! This is a terrific CD of a wonderful show! Fun listening for the entire family. The story is a re-telling of the Greek myth of Perseus (the half-god who slew the snake-haired Medusa). However, this version has a twist - it takes place in post Civil War Louisiana. The story is easy to follow because the characters themselves narrate their thoughts and actions. This makes it very simple to stage the entire play in your mind as you listen along. The play is half spoken and half sung. The dialogue is engaging, clever and funny. The characters are colorful and endearing. The score by David Maddox is terrific! You will find yourself singing along after just a couple of spins. The music really captures the Cajun flavor of the region. The actors are excellent and have fine singing voices. My two girls (ages 5 and 2) simply love this CD. They sit in front of the stereo and don't move until the last note is played. Sometimes they replay their favorite songs 2 or 3 times before moving on to the next scene. My only complaint is that we can't go and see the actual show -- does anyone know if it is playing anywhere? I bought this CD because 2 years ago I had the opportunity of taking my family to see "Sing Down the Moon" - another show by Maddox and Surface - and we loved it (that CD is also excellent)! I highly recommend Perseus Bayou -- whether you have children or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars PERSEUS BAYOU is a "Classic " American Story, May 5, 2002
By
Will Huddleston (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Perseus Bayou: The Search for the Cajun Medusa (Audio CD)
The Perseus story is one of the world's oldest hero stories and is most fun when given an exotic, creepy feel. PERSEUS BAYOU does exactly that by setting the adventures in a far-away swamp full of dangerous, half-human creatures. And "questing" stories are always the most exciting kind -- stories like Jason seeking the golden fleece or King Arthur searching for the holy grail. The main difference in PERSEUS BAYOU from the original Greek myth is that Andromeda, the girl Perseus rescues, has a bigger and more active part. And I loved the cajun music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ease on into Greek Mythology, March 18, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered this CD for my seven year old granddaughter, as a preview to taking her to see the musical on stage.

She loved it and was able to follow the tunes and narrative. She came running out of her bedroom "..he made it."

Fun way to introduce the lessons of the old myths with characters that are easy to relate to and learn about life in the bayou and some Cajun in the process.
