Editorial Reviews

The inspirational story of Marc Trestman comes to life in the pages of Perseverance, a poignant yet heart-warming motivational-biography that will challenge you to achieve heights you never dreamed possible. For more than three decades now, Marc has been on a football odyssey of sorts in which he has coached with eight NFL franchises, two NCAA Division I programs, and another in the Canadian Football League, where he won a Grey Cup championship in 2009 as the head coach of the Montreal Alouettes. Along the way, Marc has seen the best and worst of times as it relates to winning and losing at the highest levels of the game. Through his associations and friendships with countless coaches and players, he has amassed a travelogue of life lessons that will not only capture your imagination, they will change your perspective and outlook on life. Mixed in between Marc's unique ideologies and philosophies on team-building, trust and leadership, are anecdotes, quotes, funny stories, and nuggets of wisdom which provide a unique insight into the secrets of his success. Marc's passion for helping others to be the best that they can be is a message that resonates in the locker room as well as in the board room. With it, he shows that through hard work, commitment and a positive attitude, you can overcome any obstacle or adversity in life and truly... persevere.

I had the chance to read Marc Trestman's book about a year ago after a friend had given it to me as a birthday present. After finishing it, what struck me the most was the general arc of the book: life always throws twists and turns at you, but that you are most defined by the ways you respond to them. This message stuck with me at a time in my life when I was suffering through chronic depression. As a former football player myself, the transition to a ''non-athlete'' was excruciatingly difficult after suffering a series of concussions. For about a year, I was in and out of the hospital and had to undergo long-term therapy to recover from the head injuries. My life had turned itself upside down and I had no idea what would await me. Reading through Mr. Trestman's book helped me realise that life doesn't always go exactly the way you want it to, but that you can shape your destiny by working hard and maintaining your goals in sight. This book is a must-read for all people, young and old alike, who often find themselves as the underdog in life.

I must admit that I was a Lovie supporter but when he was fired I wanted to learn more about Coach Trestman. After reading his book, I'm actually excited to see if he can get our Bears to the Super bowl. This book had a nice flow, was well written and actually hard to put down. I'm a Die Hard Bears Fan and enjoy football. It was interesting to read about his different relationships in the NFL. I already like Coach Trestman when learning about his character & team approach.

"Perseverance Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork" is the perfect title for this book. Marc has learned it from every angle and is very candid in how these lessons have shaped his life, his attitude and his leadership qualities. Strangely, I started this book on his birthday and a day later he became the new head coach of the Chicago Bears.

I'm sure that it was largely the football fan that had me turning the pages so fast, also watching his early years with my Cleveland Browns that had me intrigued in the first place. Walking away from the book I know that I'm a better man and a better leader if I take the simple principals he writes of and apply them to my business and my employees. Getting people to see the best they have to offer and showing them how to "win the day", while never being bigger than the team, is the ultimate accomplishment in any setting. No matter your sports allegiance or where you are in life, this book is an inspiration to anyone that wants to persevere and rise to their greatest ability... and do it the right way.

Congratulations for all the good things that happen in your life Marc, you've earned them...

It's hard to be the lone disenting review but I have to be honest. I read this because I wanted to learn about who was taking over as the coach of the Bears. The book itself though is not nearly the classic that other reviewers would have you believe. It begins with several poorly written introductions by former players. From there Trestman begins a chapter by chapter resume of his football playing and coaching career (mostly coaching). And it really does read a bit like a resume, including a couple of letters of recommendation from coaches and players he's worked with included in each chapter that all sound so much alike one would suspect they were written from a template (i.e. Mark's so smart, he deserves to be a head coach in the NFL). He compliments them, they compliment him, repeat in next chapter. Each chapter has a short(half page or less) bumper sticker/cliche type comment on leadership and there are observations about other great coaches styles but nothing revolutionary. In each chapter Trestman moves to another city for another assistant coaching job, tells you who he works with, how the season goes, then he gets fired and the next chapter begins with the next city he moves to. And there are a lot of moves! Now, if you are a football coach who aspires to coach your entire life and hopes to climb the coaching ladder I would call this book a must read because it will definitely inform you about just how long a ladder you might be climbing. But aside from that audience I would not recommend it as a book on leadership or as a motivational book. He has persevered there's no doubt about that, I just didn't find his story motivating to me or well written. I'm not taking anything away from his long climb I'm just commenting on the book itself. It's important to remember that he is a coach, not a writer, and as long as he can do good things with the Bears this year that's all the matters to me.

A motivational book that is not only a must read for football fans, but is also a book full of life lessons as well. Marc's humble willingness to adapt, motivate and through it all persevere is not only an interesting football story, but a great story on fighting through some trying times in life.

I'd recommend it to all who are looking for an interesting/unique autobiography that will not only make for a good read, but also open your mind to how coaches can successfully communicate with others with the utmost amount of respect.

A huge fan....
