A Great Companion Album, February 18, 2009
This review is from: Perseverance - The Remixes (Audio CD)
You'll have to excuse the vagueness of this review, im writing it under the assumption that you've listened to the fantastic debut album from the legendary Percee P, if not I would recommend you go check it out right now, it will allow you to appreciate this album all the more.
A quick overview on what this album is, it has all the original rhymes that made Perseverance so amazing, so for better or worse however you felt about the rhymes on that album wont be changed here, its the same exact thing. The major difference though is that Madlib himself has gone through and remixed almost every song on the album giving Percee new backdrops to rap over, and often giving the song a completely new life. Anyone who has ever listened to a Madlib beat knows that its a lost cause trying to explain what it "sounds" like, there's so many different samples and sounds all working together at once that you can never really nail it down and pin it under one category of sound, you're either going to love it and accept it for the masterpiece that it is or write it off as complete garbage, personally I love it.
Where as the original album was Percee doing his thing over Madlib beats, this is much more Madlib doing his thing with Percee P verses, simply put the original was almost like a Percee P feat. Madlib album, this is mos def more Madlib feat. Percee P. Madlib breaths his own life in to these songs, gives his own take on how it should sound, and pretty much puts out the album as it would have been had he had the final say over it. His beats cover a vast array of sounds and vibes keeping the album from ever getting stale and Percee's vocals are synced up perfect, this isnt your average bootleg "blend" tape, a lot of work has been put in to this.
What really wins this album its 4/5 score though is that Madlib refuses to be just another producer who takes random vocals and mixes them with random beats, the songs he creates here are amazingly well put together, the beats and the way he puts the tracks together take a familiar song and completely transform it in to something new, its like hearing new music for the first time with that slight hint of familiarity, you know you're going to love it but you're still completely excited about how new and fresh it feels, need proof? look no further then 'Ghetto Rhyme Stories', Madlib transforms a simple story track into an EPIC song with always evolving music, its like watching a movie.
So why a 4/5? well regardless of how good this is, IT IS STILL OLD VOCALS, this is something we've already heard before and therefore its not going to sound as fresh as it would have if it was new Percee rhymes (of which there is a track or 2 that wasnt on the original album that fit perfectly in this collection), as a remix album its a perfect 5, but in the grand scheme of things its a very solid 4/5
