This review is from: Persian Electronic Music: Yesterday & Today 1966 (Audio CD)
This double cd set features the music of two Iranian composers Alireza Mashayekhi and Ata Ebtekar/Sote. Each disc is dedicated to the music of each respective composer. There is an informative booklet with bios and notes on the music. I was totally unfamiliar with the music and bought it because it was cheap and looked interesting: I am glad that I bought it.
Alireza Mashayekhi is an old school high modernist electronic composer often using Iranian instruments as his sound source before filtering and mangling them electronically. If you're into late 50s and 60s Stockhausen, Xenakis, Riley etc... I'm certain you'll like his atmospheric droning and at times jarring music. some of the music has an obvious middle eastern sound albeit electronically doctored, but others have a high modernist sound that doesn't sound obviously middle eastern. There's 79 minutes of his music. Ata Ebtekar/Sote's music uses tunings of classical Persian music in a modern electronic style. Some of the music is rhythmically busy and intense some more atmospheric and droning. While the booklet isn't too detailed on the electronics that he uses it seems like he uses analogue modular synthesis with digital effects. There's 49 minutes of his music on the disc. If you can't get enough of experimental electronic music I am sure you'll be happy with the purchase because it's pretty unique sounding and musically excellent. |
