Good value, accessible, authoritative!, September 18, 2005
This review is from: Persian Historiography And Geography. Bertold Spuler on Major Works Produced in Iran, the Caucasus, Central Asia, India and Early Ottoman Turkey (Paperback)
This book is a translation of a work by the late German professor Bertold Spuler, a leading scholar in Central Asian, Iranian, and Islamic studies. It deals comprehensively with the major genres and works written in the fields of geography and historiography by Muslims who wrote in Persian (farsi) in Central Asia, Persia, Turkey (before and during the Ottoman period), the Caucasus, and Muslim India.
The book contains also an interesting introduction by the translator, an established and award-winning German scholar who has lived several years in the Middle East and who had been until recently with the Center for Iranian Studies of Columbia University, New York City. The foreword was written by Professor Clifford Edmund Bosworth, a Fellow of the British Academy, who is one of the leading comtemporary scholars od mediaeval Islam and Persia. "Persian Historiograpy and Geography" is concise and accessible and should also be of value to the general reader interested in the splendors of Persian civilization.
Another recommendable work authored by Dr. Marcinkowski is "Religion and Politics in Iraq" which has been published by the same publisher and which is also available via amazon.com.
