- 'Additional' titles given to his III and IV Books!
As in any read of authors of the past one finds the very jewels of thought, ideas, 'edict', 'rule' and turns of phrase one may well have assumed of more recent invention.
But there seems, especially in reading Herodotus, that there is really and truly, if not 'nothing', then very little new under the sun.
The work of this historian seems to me: shall I say it?
A very special link between the very old world of man and the modern.
Though he lived and traveled and laboured four to five hundred years before the current era, he presents to an attentioned mind glimpses, I believe, of the deep past, brought to us via the stories, myth and hearsay of the tellers of the accounts he received and recorded, and of his own eyes, without much sift and rework by his prejudices.
It is important that present historians realize the value of this.
And of course a read of this Writer in Greek is an especial treat when perused in its 'original' language.
