Joe Maganarelli is a solid, swinging, hard-bop trumpeter whose nicely shaped solo lines tell a very enjoyable musical story. "Persistence", Joe's first CD for Reservoir, reflects his musical personality perfectly. The music on this CD is generally straight ahead and straight forward, but with enough twists and turns to grab and hold the listener's attention. The program comprises three standards and five orginals by Magnarelli whose writing is just as interesting as his trumpet playing.

The CD has a nice balance of swingers and ballads along with a "groove" track, the aptly named "D Train Boogaloo." Other fine tracks include the hard swinging opening track, "Persist;" the bossa nova based, "The Village"; the loping "Haunted Heart," and the nicely voiced, lyrical "Ballad for Barretto". Magnarelli and baritonist Gary Smulyan make a very compatible front-line throughout the CD and both really show their chops on the romping "You and the Night and the Music." A couple of choruses of simultaneous improvising by trumpet and baritone on this track may be the the musical high point of the CD. Certainly it is the most exciting.

The rhythm section of David Hazeltine, Peter Washington and Kenny Washington is first-class. These men know the hard-bop language perfectly and play with taste and class. Hazeltine's fluent and slighly understated solos are a special delight. Peter Washington's bass is well featured on the arrangement of "Soul Sister", Magnarelli's refreshing take on "Body and Soul."

Joe Magnarelli's "Persistence" may not burn you with scorching hard bop heat, but it will defintely warm and uplift your heart. This superbly recorded 57 minute CD is highly recommended to fans of straight-ahead hard bop.

this cd is an incredible example of what u hear if yer lucky enough to catch joe magnarelli live at his regular gigs at smalls in nyc--- this is first class all the way.there is so much to hear in this fine swinging disc so much to listen to and appreciate--- nothing over stated this is the real deal--- --this level of playing is a real thrill to hear and all too rare -it makes it all the more choice to hear something this tasty------ it swings has melody and a beat... its real music !!!! & played by masters... the haunted heart... waSHINGTONS BEAUTIFUL PERFECT MELLOW RICH & DEEP BASS LINES LAY THE FOUNDATION FOR SOME BEAUTIFUL STUFF--- THE WHOLE THING swings forward in such an easy infectious way-- the innate sense of swing these guys all have their superb interplay- the sublety of it all----this is rich stuff- THEN.. right into joe's own great d train boogaloo-- u can hear n feel this train-- & glad to be on it---great enseMble work----you and the night and the music-- this thing realLy catches FIRE--- the pulse of the bass is thrilling-- as it sets off everyone's runs -like skiers off a high jump doing back flips-- always landing on their feet running..the interplays incredible on this one..deep and very satisfyin cookin goin on in this beauty---on his tune the village u can realLy heaR THE UNIQUE AND BEAUTUFUL TONE JOE GETS OUT OF HIS HORN SO EASILY --- ITS JSUT SHEER POETRY--U ARENT HEARING A HORN ANY MORE -- BUT THE BEAUTY THAT IS COMING THRU IT----- AMAZING---AND A TOTALLY UNIQUE SOUND- ESP IN A TRUMPET WHICH IS SO USUALLY IN YER FACE !!!!!-HES A POET !!- MAGNARELLI AND THE GANG HE GATHERED HERE WEAVE MAGIC SPELLS;FOR ThOSE WHO HAVE EARS TO LISTEN...THIS IS FOR YOU ...
