5.0 out of 5 stars Be the person you want to be
Be the person you want to be by John J. Emerick is a fantastic book about getting congruent with yourself and other people you deal with. I like the test near the front of the book. It gave me an opportunity to really take a good look at myself and for me to decide if I am in fact, the person I want to be. It is a great book because it is easy to read, understand and...

1.0 out of 5 stars Promises and padding. Not much delivered.
The book promises practical steps in NLP to improve aspects of ones life. These are not forthcoming. There is a lot of padding and redundancy which becomes tedious after the first chapter. I started making notes. Then I got to scoring out passages. Then pages. In the end I was so annoyed I tore out irrelevant pages in chunks. Out of the first 150 pages, there was only...

Be the person you want to be by John J. Emerick is a fantastic book about getting congruent with yourself and other people you deal with. I like the test near the front of the book. It gave me an opportunity to really take a good look at myself and for me to decide if I am in fact, the person I want to be. It is a great book because it is easy to read, understand and apply. I've recommended the book to several friends who had very little knowledge about NLP. The feedback I have received is very good, and they all have said they understand the principles and could instantly apply the methods to their lives. I think the book is stimulating, I am a certified trainer of NLP, and even the most advanced of NLP practitioners or trainers can get much value from the book. I was never bored with it and often times had a hard time putting it down. It's one of those books I'll be reading again and certainly recommed it to anyone who has an intrest in bettering their life.

Out of the first 150 pages, there was only about a page and a half I thought worth keeping. Simple ideas are cloaked in obscure terminology which reminds me of those boring management seminars in hot rooms where everybody falls asleep in the afternoon. Which is a shame because I am sure NLP has something to offer. This is not a 'how to' manual although it claims to be.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too many words make for a tedious read., August 21, 1999

When seperated from all the chaff, Emerick's ideas are intriguing. The problem with this book is the chaff. On his way to (eventually) conveying his message, Emerick manages to bore and irritate the reader with page after page of empty and useless elaboration of a point that he has already made. I found myself saying "enough already!" as I skimmed in search of the next bit of substance. Ironic for a book about communication, eh?

Most NLP books are unreadable.

NLP is supposed to be about the study of excellent human performance, and how to model it. However, most NLP books get caught up in issues like hypnosis and therapy, and are written like psychiatric textbooks: bore, snore.

Most NLP "poobahs" thumb their nose at Anthony Robbins; let's face it, his works are popular because they're about self-improvement and are east to read. This book by John Emerick is along the same vein, but with more specific how-tos, and less cheerleading, than the Tony Robbins books.

Rather than spend hundreds of dollars on NLP and NLP-related books looking for a guide for specific self-improvement, buy this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars highly recommendable, June 23, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Be the Person You Want to Be: Harness the Power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to Reach Your Potential (Paperback)
Reading the book is like exploring things that you thought you already knew, but in fact, recognizing that you do not use the power of this knowledge.
For example, everyone knows that a win-win situation is a good deal in any of life's situations, but we do not always take it into consideration when handling our affairs, and often act in manners that cause conflicts and waste the energy we need to have success. This book brings out the better aspect of relating with people. I recommend it highly

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money, February 18, 2005
This review is from: Be the Person You Want to Be: Harness the Power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to Reach Your Potential (Paperback)
This has got be one of the worst books I've read. Yes, even worse than those psychology books on tests and measurements that you took in university ... and those were pretty bad.

This book was obviously written to fill pages and make it look substantial (the only thing substantial about it is it's price).

It's opaque and the subject matter, which should be exciting, is agonizingly painful to grasp. Listen, you have to have a good command of the english language to communicate effectively in the written word ... especially in the written word. Repetition and recycling a limited vocabulary in annoying and irritating. What makes every turkey think they are qualified to write just because they have taken a few courses? Hey, if it was that easy, getting your jouralism degree could be done in an afternoon. Duh.

My recommendation to all of you that are considering this book is: A) save you money ... and more important, your time. B) You're better off to re-read 'using your brain .. for a change' by Richad Bandler. C) Wait for another book on NLP.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! INFORMATIVE AND ENJOYABLE!, April 2, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Be the Person You Want to Be: Harness the Power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to Reach Your Potential (Paperback)
In a sea of self-help books, here is one that really delivers on its claims to make a difference in your life. I found the exercises meaningful and relavent to real-life situations and actually enjoyed performing them. Mr. Emerick is able to present his vast knowledge of NLP in a manner that is both informative and entertaining. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I am already the person i want to be! The book was a gift., November 2, 1997
This review is from: Be the Person You Want to Be: Harness the Power of Neuro-Linguistic Programming to Reach Your Potential (Paperback)
As you may surmise, I am fairly self-confident and do not generally ask for help. Fortunately, my wife purchased the book for me to read. I have learned that what I already knew needed to be re-awakened in the form of a new presentation. With simple examples I could relate to my own , ahem , short comings. There are a number of techniques that we all can use to help in our business and personnal relations. The book is must reading for anyone that deals with a multitude of personalities and would like to be appreciated by them.
