5.0 out of 5 stars One of the few original albums from Columbia still available, May 10, 2000
By

This album is one of the only ones issued on Columbia Records that is still available, which is a true shame! Most music of the Clancy Brothers is either from the even older Tradition label or are compilations excerpted from the Columbia catalogue.

The Carnegie Hall Concert, though features the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem at their best! Johnson's Motor Car is a funny song arising from the very unfunny troubles betwee the Irish and British, while The Patriot Game is a brilliant and powerful anti-war song.

The Irish tongue is so musical, and when Tom Clancy recites the poetry of William Butler Yeats, no singing is necessary! Listen to his recitation of O'Driscoll, and hear the music in his voice!

The Children's Medley is a classic! Listen to the wisdom amidst the nonsense words within many of these children's street songs...out of the mouths of babes comes much wisdom!

I strongly recommend this CD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Never Better and LIVE, October 10, 2000

The Clancy Brothers are a group that you really want to hear in a LIVE recording. This CD captures that very well. Listen to the Lyrics. They often go from being extremely funny, to desparately sad. But thats all a part of being IRISH.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun night out!, March 18, 2001

This CD shows the Clancy/Makem collaboration at its best:In front of a responsive crowd, in great voice, with a collection of Irish folk tunes, Rebel songs, and the wonderful medley of Irish children's songs that show the humor and pain of growing up in Ireland. Touching and funny, this CD is for anyone who enjoys the vocal side of Irish music.Besides, where else will you find a Gaelic sing-along sung by a packed Carnegie Hall crowd?

5.0 out of 5 stars A great early Clancy/Makem album, August 12, 2004

I agree with the other reviewers about this album. "Johnson's motor car" was a great hit. They performed it on the Ed Sullivan show on St. Patrick's Day. The "Children's melodies" section still stirs emotions and memories from our daughters (now in their late 40"s). I have never heard a more moving performance of "The parting glass".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Live Album, August 20, 2004
The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were the finest Irish group to ever come along. They were soley responsible for the Irish Folk revival in Ireland, and brought it to the USA. It is very unfortunate that the original concerts aren't available on CD, but this one is. After listening to old LP's, I find that they always performed better live vs. studio. A great album, and a must for any Irish music lover. BUY NOW!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Music that means something !, February 1, 2003
By A Customer
So much of the "music" we hear today is nothing more than noise coupled with the required dancing. Take away the visuals and there's NOTHING !! While I was growing up, I refused to listen to traditional Irish music, folk music, classical music, etc. What a pity !! I will always regret not seeing the Clancy Bros. perform... one listen to this masterpiece of beautifully crafted songs filled with wit, humor, anger and sadness shows why ! In particular for me is "The Parting Glass", the final song. So simple in it's construction; which belies the genious; it is a heart touching tune sung solely by Liam Clancy then achingly beautifully joined by the others. In the end, when Tom Clancy emparts to the audience with "God bless"..... you know he means it !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Have been looking for the Children's Medly forever!, May 18, 2007

I was so excited to find this CD including the Children's Medly. I wanted my children to learn the songs that I learned when I was young and that you don't hear anyone sing anymore. I hope the traditional music of the Clancy's and Tommy Makem lives on long beyond their time.

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute classic, May 21, 1999
By A Customer
Sony has treated this great Irish group's catalogue shamefully, but this is one rare example where someone had the brains to issue an extraordinary LP on compact disc. There isn't a bad note on this energetic December 1964 concert recording, and the mix of ballads, children's songs and feisty rebel tunes is as close to perfection as possible. This album and the 1984 Reunion CD should be in the collection of every serious Celtic music collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars Make you sing out loud and puts a smile on your face, January 1, 2000

I play this CD in my kitchen while I am cooking and I can often be heard belting out the tunes along with the Clancy Brothers - it is so infectious, it will make you want to dance! The first half is rollicking, the second half more pensive. Classic live Clancy Brothers!
