I have been co-leading a Danville (CA) ministry focused on coaching executives, managers, and professionals in-transition since the crash of 2001. Our weekly meetings consist of workshops and speakers addressing personal brand development, networking, interviewing, and much more. Michael Breen, former SVP, Brand Strategy, Lowe and Partners, serves as our branding expert and teacher.

Chritton's "Personal Branding for Dummies" provides a great introductory overview of personal branding. She covers all the bases, explains cutting-edge approaches for marketing one's brand, and makes the most important point of all, "establishing yourself as a (subject matter) expert," or as one of our speakers, author Jack Reed, said, "be the one eyed giant in the land of the blind."

Chritton has organized "Personal Branding" around five chapters:
1. Why is personal branding important
2. Knowing your brand
3. Communicating your brand with the world
4. Controlling your brand ecosystem
5. The Part of Tens (four sets of 10 things to do or not to do to protect your brand)

The one weakness of this book is the absence of reference books (and there are many good ones) to use for delving deeper into subject areas of interest. We recommend Loehr's "The Power of Story" to help in aligning gifts with passions to insure the "story" lived is the right story and not someone else's, like one's parents; Rath's (Gallup) "StrengthsFinders 2.0" to help people with identifying and articulating their strengths; and Schwerdtfeger's "Marketing Short-Cuts" which has a step-by-step, how to integrate blogs, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, etc. into any marketing campaign - personal or company.

Branding is a term tossed around a lot lately. As an author, branding is important to me. I requested this book to help guide me. What I love about this book, and others in this series, is that it breaks down a complex topic into smaller chunks. In this book, it starts at the beginning: telling the reader why personal branding is important. An interesting aspect from Chapter 2 is how the book examines successful brands like Disney, Apple, Starbucks and Target. The book also provides case studies, so you really can get a grip on what brands are and how the right brand makes a difference.

The rest of the book focuses on you: how to define your mission and vision, goal setting, understanding your target market, knowing your niche, and more. It shares how to craft your personal brand profile and how to communicate your brand online. I look forward to putting many more aspects of it into play than I have.

Like other books in the series, there are cute images to highlight important tips, warnings, and things you need to remember. If you're confused about branding, you need this book.

This book is helpful guidance for the self-employed or one seeking employment. It runs the gamut from finding "your brand", your strength & weaknesses, to resume's and the way you dress for your career, using social media for your brand, and knowing your competitors. What was resourceful for me is determining "your brand" by asking yourself certain questions prior to proceeding. Staying focused and on track of your brand through consistency, marketing, and reputation. This book has a little bit of everything! Everything from business cards, decorating your workspace, determining your target market, marketing through normal and social means, developing an international bio, preparing Powerpoint, press releases, biographies, and storytelling. This book is a well balanced base to build on in your workplace and worldwide. I would recommend this book for new business owner's to reinventing yourself.

I love this book - and it's not just because it was written by a Reach Personal Branding Master Strategist, has a number of Reach Strategists as contributors, and endorses the Reach Personal Branding methodology. It's because it is simple, thorough and actionable. For anyone who might be intimidated by the thought of building their brand or reluctant to use the concepts of branding to propel their career, Personal Branding for Dummies provides the `why', `how' and `what do I get'. It takes the reader step-by-step through the process of uncovering and expressing their brand and showcases examples that make it easy to digest. Susan Chritton has always been a leader in the Reach Brand Community and is among only a handful of people we have certified to the Masters level. She continues to demonstrate her passion for personal branding and shares her enthusiasm and expertise throughout the book. A major element of her brand is her ability to connect others and collaborate; that brand attribute allowed her to pull together the right experts to augment her writing.
