Panis Angelicus,
By Coco Loco (Chicago) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Personal Christmas Collection (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for that one song alone! My parents had a compilation LP (now in my collection) that included Barbra Streisand, Julie Andrews, and many other incredible singers. I think it was a giveaway at Christmas at the Firestone tire store -- no I'm not kidding -- and the most incredible thing on that whole album was Robert Goulet singing Panis Angelicus. I had never heard the song before, don't know Latin.....but oh my God
I picked it up on eBay a few days ago. There were 3-4 other copies available. While I do have that vinyl LP, and enjoy all of the other songs and singers on it, this is the one I "need" on CD format so I can carry it around, load it into my computer, include it in my own Christmas playlists.... I am looking forward to the other material on the CD, but all I need is Panis Angelicus. Obviously, for me this is the definitive rendition of this beautiful song.

Yuletide Goulet,
This review is from: A Personal Christmas Collection (Audio CD)
Every holiday record should have at least one original (or at least, less well known) tune, and this Robert Goulet collection cuts right to the chase and fronts one song most listeners will NOT already know like the back of their (mittened) hands. And it's a good'un, "This Christmas I Spend With You" probably deserves a wider audience, if not actually "classic" status. Goulet, noted for his ability to lend something new to every standard he tackled, seems to have possessed a solid instinct for tracking down less well known gems as well. A second "original" Burt Bacharach's "Christmas Day" is also quite nice, though I would not number it among the composer's absolute best. Still Goulet renders it sensitively.
That Robert Goulet possessed a gorgeous baritone is a well known, but he also was a fine interpreter. His phrasing is never ornate. He pays attention to the lyrics. One tends to associate him with towering performances like "The Impossible Dream." On this Christmas album, he achieves a similar majesty with "O Holy Night." But his "Panis Angelicus" is also great, but in a quite different way. First off, he does not butcher the Latin--or plow through it, sounding like he can't wait for it to end. He could have added a bit more bombast in an attempt to astound the masses, but he sings the Latin text as though it has meaning. It's really quite lovely, easily crossing over from the realm of pop to "classical" stature. Goulet came to prominence in an era when gorgeous voices were beginning to be viewed with suspicion gives a new generation a chance to check out this remarkable singer. We shall not see his like again.. A shame really. There was room for the Beatles, Bob Dylan AND Bob Goulet. If we were really all about being open to every experience, we should have realized that. And honored talent in all its forms. This bargain "Nice Price" Christmas album

Christmas isn't Christmas without Robert Goulet!,

This review is from: A Personal Christmas Collection (Audio CD)
This is the ultimate Christmas album in my house!! I grew up with this album (and many others) being played everyday between Thanksgiving and Christmas!! Just hearing the first few notes takes me back 25-30 years easily!! I turned my husband on to Mr. Goulet some 10 years ago and now he (and our 3 children) love it too! A must have! I just got the CD last year (after much searching). I still have the original album, but the kids can't understand why you can't jump up and down while listening to an album, besides it's nice to have this one to listen to in the van!!
