4.0 out of 5 stars Works as advertised
I think the people who gave bad reviews just need to spend a little more time with it. It's not going to help you much if you don't understand the science behind it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Personal Cooling System is a Joke
My son and I both tried this "personal cooling system."
The fit was not comfortable. It pressed on various nerves and tender parts and was impossible to forget it was on.
The cooling effect is a joke. Although it appears to have seven openings in the air outlet, actually only two of them are open. The cool breeze is barely noticeable. What little there was...

I think the people who gave bad reviews just need to spend a little more time with it. It's not going to help you much if you don't understand the science behind it.

I received my cooling system today and have been wearing it for two hours (on a nasty Jersey summer day). I had to turn the fan to low because it was starting to get a little too cold. It's really comfortable (even on my fat neck). If you know what it feels like to have a cold towel around your neck, then you know what to expect from this product. The only difference is that you don't get wet (for the most part) and it STAYS cool for hours.

A couple things you should know before using this:

1. You need to let it prime on the first use. Keep adding water every couple of minutes to get the sponges nice and soaked.

2. Shake the excess water out once you fill it. If you don't shake it, prepare to get dripped on.

3. Keeping adjusting the collar until you can really feel the effect. This thing has a sweet spot, and I'm sure it's different for everyone.

4. Make sure you wear it UNDER your hair (if your hair is long).

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeps me cool on my walk to work, May 2, 2006
I'm lucky to live in San Francisco so hot weather alone is not really an issue. But I also walk to work (about 45 minute up and down the hills between my apartment and office) and on warm or even slightly warm days I quickly get overheated. Rather than slow my walking pace or give up walking on these days I tried the personal cooling system.

I find it works extremeley well at keeping me from overheating. I am still able to enjoy my walk to work and arrive fresh and presentable at the office.

You do need to be carefull filling the unit. Water flows through when it is full and I recommend a good shake to get rid of any excess drops before putting it on. Other than that no issues at all. The batteries last a long time and the Neck Cooler itself is very durable. I am going on three years with mine.

4.0 out of 5 stars it works for me, July 7, 2006

I found this product to really helped me in hot weather when I wanted to do outside jobs like gardening.
But my husband teases me about spacey looks, and I certainly would not wear it outside my own yard.
Love it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Personal Cooling System is a Joke, June 17, 2006
My son and I both tried this "personal cooling system."
The fit was not comfortable. It pressed on various nerves and tender parts and was impossible to forget it was on.
The cooling effect is a joke. Although it appears to have seven openings in the air outlet, actually only two of them are open. The cool breeze is barely noticeable. What little there was aimed more at the base of the skull rather than the back of the neck. It failed to penetrate my son's hair (very short) or mine (pinned up).
We are back to wrapping our necks and heads in wet towels. The effect doesn't last as long but it's a lot cooler and a whole lot cheaper!
Needless to say, I'm returning this device.

1.0 out of 5 stars Too good to be true? Yup!, July 19, 2006

If a product you see advertised seems too good to be true, it probably is. The Personal Cooling System doesn't live up to its claims.

If you're reading this you are doing the same thing I did. Check out what other people who bought the product had to say. The problem is that some reviews are actually favorable! You want to believe the favorable ones. If it works as advertised -wow! Sadly, no way. Now, I won't say that the favorable reviews were written by employees who work for Sharper Image, or the ad company that put together the commercial, but I can't think of what else could explain the favorable reviews.

Bottom line... It didn't come close. The fan, powered by a single double A battery, was so weak that even if the cooling moisture they promised had been generated I wouldn't have felt it. While the fit wasn't uncomfortable, all it did was make my neck sweaty. You'd be better off with the wet towel they suggest in their promo.

Do not buy this product unless you keep the receipt for an exchange. Luckily I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL, May 12, 2010
This review is from: Personal Cooling System 3.0 ** Sharper Image Design ** with Fan ** Evaporative (Health and Beauty)
This item is wonderful, I have had one for over 8 years it still works great & we have just ordered a 2nd one.

However I suggest that you order it direct from sharper image as through them the cost is 39.95
can not say enogh good things about it!

1.0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment, August 2, 2007

Please do not waste your money. I bought this product with the hope that it would make my wait in the underground train station just a little bit easier to bear. Not too much to ask, however even with the unit on high, I felt nothing. A warning if you are not indoors and standing over a sink when refilling you will wind up with a big mess. Do yourself a favor and get one of those hand held mini fans, they are much cheaper and will probably keep you cooler.

1.0 out of 5 stars LISTEN TO EVERYONE AND DO NOT BUY IT, July 27, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. for people living in the hot desert, or even sunny florida, This is NOT the product you want.

It surely delivers some cool feeling the first 2 minutes you put it on (only because of the cold water not the equipment), but it wears off rapidly. If you are in real need of coldness, then I suggest wearing a wet towel or bandana, and stay properly hydrated. You wont look as dumb as if wearing a big noticeable collar and look different than everyone else.

This product would work better if it only had more cold generative power for hot temperatures.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR DESERT TEMPERATURES

1.0 out of 5 stars Does Not Work, July 17, 2006
Plain and simple...this product does not work....I have tested it under moderate weather conditions.....doesn't even work with temps in the 70s or 80s. A pure case of over-hype..underperform. I don't know how much Sharper Image paid those people in their infomercial to laud the product...but I hope a lot. I will be returning the product at my earliest convenience. I wholeheartedly recommend a large washcloth soaked in ice.
