Remaining true to his British metal roots,

This review is from: Personal Crisis (Audio CD)
Steve Grimmett rose from the ranks of the NWOBHM movement during the early 80s. At that time he established himself as the voice of "Grim Reaper" and "Onslaught". During the late 80s he put together a new glam metal outfit "Lionsheart" which is considered to be his most commercially successful attempt particularly in Japan.2007 sees the release of his first solo album "Personal Crisis" which in a way follows up to 2004's "Lionsheart- Abyss" record. If you enjoyed the latest mentioned release then this one is expected to please you even more. Once again Steve Grimmett comes up with heavy riffs, big choruses and clever guitar/bass melodies. Yet the brilliance of this album lies in the fact that Steve pushes his creative boarders even further by adding guest female vocal appearances, more sophisticated rhythm section and even more technical guitar playing. So although as heavy as his previous highlights, this release is the most colorful and multidimensional work of Steve to date. "Power Play" magazine (issue 94) marks this album with 8/10 commenting "A total triumph"

'Personal Crisis' is the new solo album from Steve Grimmett, the former lead vocalist from the underated 80's metal act Grim Reaper. Steve also was active later on with Onslaught and Lionsheart which to be honest I am not familiar with.Right away Steve Grimmett shows us what he's all about in 2007 and that's pure straight up Heavy Metal! Aggressive and melodic at the same time, the metal laced hard rock style that the band displays is very catchy yet has a lot of balls, never sounding too watered down like a lot of other bands in this genre tend to do. The material is very mature and well written, while roots from the 80's can always be heard, the overall sound is very up to date and modern so don't expect a disc full of 80's metal ala Grim Reaper. Steve's voice is very impressive and he is able to showcase his singing abilities in a wide variety of ways that would put many of todays one dimensional vocalists to shame. His vocal melodies are very strong creating some nice big hooks in the choruses. The chorus in the song 'Karma' is worth the price of the album alone and is one of the finest hooks I have heard in a while! But it is really hard to pick out favorite tracks on this album because almost every song is very good. Also worth mentioning is the fine guitar work set forth by Ian Nash. His creative riffing and tasteful soloing throughout the entire album is very well done! The production by Dennis Ward is also excellent. Hard as nails and a little rough around the edges giving the sound a nice charachter. Still clear enough to hear all of the details but not overly slick or polished which is refreshing IMO. Overall this is an excellent album for anyone who is into modern traditional heavy metal. This will definately be in my top ten albums for 2007! Looking forward to hearing more from this fine act. P.S. Looks like this is only available here as an expensive import. I ordered my copy from 'the end records' for a normal cd price.
