Easier & Faster, More Comfortable Pumping,
By SMB711 "Sheena" (Columbus, OH USA) - See all my reviews

These breastshields are a great investment for women with larger breasts or nipples. I tried the 24mm breastshields that came with my Medela Freestyle pump and they did not fit at all. So I went to Target to get larger ones and they had the 27mm size, so I got those. Those were better, but still a little too small, so I searched online for these 30mm ones. Once I received these and used them I was elated because it made the pumping much more comfortable and the milk came out much quicker. I would highly recommend these! By the way, I am a D cup while nursing, if that helps anyone get an idea of who these might work for.

Not necessarily for large breasted women,

I mistakenly thought that these were needed for large breasted women (in part, based on what other reviewers said). Not necessarily. These are for women with extra-thick nipples, not extra large breasts. I bought these while pregnant, trying to get ready, but it turns out I didn't need them. Although I ended up ballooning out to a 40H, I seem to fit just fine into the normal sized breastshields. Apparently, my nipples are normal sized. Amenda has a website that explains it all, but more or less, if your nipple is rubbing against the side, then you need to go to a bigger size. The 30 mm seems to be the diameter of the tunnel. The cone itself is only very slightly bigger in the 30 mm size. If you are having trouble and you think you need bigger or wider cones, don't buy this because the cone really is not much bigger.
I did have a different problem in that my breast was not well supported during pumping and the rim of the shield would dig into my breast. It appears that the answer to that problem is to get a nursing bra that offers support even while pumping. The Fancee Free bra seems to offer this and although it is a pretty hideous bra, it seems to get the job done.

Increased output,

Buying the right size breastshields makes all the difference. When I went from the standard (24mm) to these (30mm), I immediately noticed a difference in how much milk I was able to pump.
If you're going through the time and energy (and good for you by the way :) to pump, you want it to be as efficient as possible, and if you have large nipples, it's worth it to get these.

I bough a free-style Medela breast pump that came with soft breastshields. The problem that i was having was that soft breastshield would warp and get out of shape after a few uses. I am pumping 8 times a day and would go through about 4 sets of soft breastshields in about a month. I did the math and realized that if i wanted to breastfeed for a year, i would spend about $500 on breastshields. Please, Medela, have a mercy for a breastfeeding woman! It probably costs a few cents to produce a breastshield anyway. This is twice as much as i paid for a pump itself! Anyway, i tried the hard shell breastshields and could not be happier. They are much easier on my breasts (soft ones will always stick on the skin) and are much more cost affective.

I got this size up from the 27mm because I started leaking from the bottom of the shield while pumping. I didn't realize it would not only help with the leaks, but it seemed to decrease my pumping time and increase my supply within days. I recommended these to all my large breasted mommy friends. I am very satisfied with the results.

I own the Medela Freestyle and tried to use the soft cup shields that came with it but it left me sore and swollen. I'm a full C cup normally and thought the 30mm would be a good fit, but after using once it didn't seem to be doing the job. I later purchased the 27mm and they are perfect. It makes all the difference in the world by having the right size...no soreness, no swelling, and very efficient! If you think the breast shields that came with your pump are too small, they probably are. No point in owning a good quality breast pump if it doesn't fit you. These are worth every penny!

These shields fit perfectly for my size DD breasts. The ones provided with the medela kit are much too small, and they only sale up to size large in the stores. Fast shipping and good packaging. Recommended.

I bought this product after using the standard sized Medela Shield and being refered by a nurse. If you have larger breasts/areolas, this is the product for you! I had to pump exclusively with my son, and if I hadn't bought these shields, I wouldn't have been able to do it due to pain and low supply. This not only increased my supply, the comfort it provided allowed me to pump for many weeks exclusively.
