These men have a talent for harmonizing and they also have a nice sound to them. The music is off the hook. What can I say, I just like it.:)

3.0 out of 5 stars Forgotten 90s R&B, February 29, 2008
By
This review is from: Personal (Audio CD)
This debut 1996 release is a mixed bag to say the least, but is still worth a look for those who like their R&B on the more mid-tempo/balladry side, with a dash of up-tempo grooves to mix things up.

Cons: As talented as Prathan "Spanky" Williams is (he is the lead vocal on the majority of the cuts here, and also co-producer/executive producer) his vocal aren't the strongest of this quartet, and on some songs they do stand out, but not for the right reasons. The majority of the songs here that he wrote are, too my mind, some of the weakest on display (and a bit corny, see the first song 'That's alright')

Pros: The involvement of Teddy Riley. I'm some what biased, as I'm a big fan of his work, and it was his name on this CD, plus the new jack swing inspired remake of the The Jacksons 'Show you the Way to go' that led me to this CD. Whilst no where as good as the original, it is a slice of New Jack heaven, that stills sounds good some 12 years later. The big hit of this CD was the 'Housekeeper' track, which all four of the quartet share vocals, and is a nice two step groove. My favourite cut is the title track, which is a beautiful written song, and has Teddy using a vocal voice rendition a la Zapp & Roger - All the Greatest Hits( as well as his excellent keyboards skills)

Men of Vizion went on to release Men of Vizion & Men of Vizion, and I believe are still together( after some personnel changes) to this day. A nice slice of 90's R & B

Soon, I will do a list of best slept-on R/B albums, and this will rank very high on that list, right along with Frankie's My Heart Belongs to You, Sandra St. Victor's Mack Diva Saves the World, and Christion's Ghetto Cyrano. How very sad that good music gets buried by fluff and hype. But enough of this soap box. I have had this CD for one week. I am currently listening to it for the second time. I like to peruse Amazon and see what low-cost R/B I can find, especially those unheralded ones that just may be good. Among the latest batch of CDs that I ordered, were one by Ideal and one by Intro. While I could have certainly lived without either of these CDs, Personal is absolutely fantastic!

In the 1990s Jodeci, Boys II Men - and to a lesser degree Silk and maybe even Mint Condition were the groups that monopolize the R/B airways, and with good reason. These are all exceptional male R/B groups. Unfortunately, though, with their success, other well-deserving groups got lost in the mix, MOV is one of these groups.

Look, if you are a fan of any of the following: Jodeci, Silk, LaVert, Boys II Men, Johnny Gill, and or Guy, you will not be disappointed by Personal. From song to song, I find myself saying, "that sounds like... " any of the above. Don't get me wrong - I am not saying they are trying to imitate any of the above - I am saying just how good they sound - how good they harmonize - how good the songs are. Where MOV really hit a high note with me is with their cover of the Jacksons' Show You the Way to Go! It is one of the most on-point remakes I have ever heard - They stay very true to the original, while adding a not-so overbearing hip-hop up-beatness to it. For me, the only weakness of this song.. is the annoying "Ah 1 -2 ah 1-2" going on in the background.

Finally, what makes this stands out - is that this CD is really a beautiful reflection of R/B where the message is about honoring Black Women with love, commitment, and respect - There are no over-sexualized lyrics here. Women are not objectified - but the songs still are able to be provocative enough to produce some mean slow-jams! Also, there are a few upbeat songs on this as well - more of the New Jack Swing sound!

If there is a drawback here, it is that on a couple of sounds, they simply sound very young - Maybe they were, I do not know much about them. One It's Only Just a Dream, while a beautiful song, one of the lead singers sounds like a 13-year old. But do not think this is candy-pop or candy R/B - This ain't a young New Edition. These brothers can actually sang! These brothers have it, they really do! Now go out and get your copy and spread the word.
