Very well written book. Though you have to have some beginning-level knowledge of Personal Oracle8 before you pick up this book. Some chapters are summarized because of the advanced nature of topic. However, they would make more sense if they might have been summarized more in general term, e.g., NCA chapter. In summary, this is an excellent source to learn Personal Oracle8 and then move to Enterprise Oracle.

Description of the contents of the CD are untruthful,
By A Customer
This review is from: Personal Oracle8 Explorer (Paperback)
I'm having all kinds of difficulty installing "Personal Oracle8" (one of your books). The instructions in the book for doing the install say simply to insert the CD and a menu will pop up leading me through the installation process. That is not what happens at all. In fact the chapter on installation is completly different from what I'm experiencing. On the cover of the CD itself, it says to execute the "Install.exe", which I did. I did get a bunch of things installed on the computer, but none are useful at the moment. I don't have a windows group for Personal Oracle8. I do have something like 15 different setup*.exe files located in different folders. Am I supposed to run each one individually? I tried running the setup.exe that is located in the ...\SQLStation\Station folder but it asks for The License Agreement for SQL-Station First Edition (found on the SoftWare License Agreement included with the distribution media). I have no idea where to find this. Why isn't the installation process running the way that the book describes. Please advise me on what I'm doing wrong. I doesn't seem like the Personal Oracle8 software that comes with the book matches the book. Thanks. Graham graham.o'connor@pwgsc.gc.ca

poorly written, misled reader.,
By lee rodgers (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Personal Oracle8 Explorer (Paperback)
this book is poorly written. for example:1. in ch. 1, the author talks about start database without mention what database you are actually starting or what 'start database' means. 2. in ch.2, you suppose to create a new database, but all you see from the author is how to create a project under personal oracle 8 what is the difference between a database and project! nothing is said. 3.what is that local database? the author's writting is so confusing. 4. the author misled the reader to think the cd accompany the book has peronal oracle on it. IT DOES NOT! the cd of the book only contains junks! this list can go on and on and on! don't waste your money!

Already obsolete -- not for WindowsNT,

This review is from: Personal Oracle8 Explorer (Paperback)
I'm not going to pan this book. It's actually pretty good. Unfortunately it's written for Personal Oracle 8.0.3 for Windows 95. I'm running Personal Oracle 8i 8.1.5 for Windows NT and you'd think it was a completely different product. The author spends alot of time discussing a component that doesn't even exist in version 8.1.5: the Oracle8 Navigator. Still, once you overcome installation issues the book has some useful information.

I bought this book from amazon.com (about 2 months ago) and have read it cover to cover except the DBA chapters 16 & 17. I found the book an excellent starting point for someone like myself with PC and web publishing skills with database knowledge. I now use it for refresher explanation and reference.I appreciated all of the solid and complete examples and coverage of the fundamentals of Oracle RDBMS and SQL. I got the feeling from reading this book that the author wanted to give the reader a solid understanding of Oracle RDBMS / SQL and not let them just get by like so many other books. This is further confirmed by NOT discussing Dev2000. Chapter four did leave me dazed, normalization is so normal, but so difficult to elaborate on. Finally, A suggestion for those having trouble with the CD-ROM. I wouldn't buy any book for it's free software. Most of the time it's dated and there is NO reason to with Oracle. For $5.00 Oracle will give just about EVERY PROGRAM YOU NEED! Check out the "Try & Buy" page at oracle.com. In fact I manually went through every SQL example in this book and never broke the seal on the CD (I used Personal Oracle8 from Oracle for $5). PS You need (to buy) another book for PL/SQL

An Extremely good book to learn from.,

This review is from: Personal Oracle8 Explorer (Paperback)
I have found this book to be essential, in the learning process of Oracle8. I use it to teach my students on the basics of the Oracle Database.Although the book does come with a copy of the demo database onthe CDROM, there is no copy of Personal Oracle8. But you can get a free copy from Oracle, so this is no real problem. Overall this book have proved to be invaluable.

CD-ROm Contents are very misleading,
By A Customer
This review is from: Personal Oracle8 Explorer (Paperback)
This book does include a CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is missing the the Personal Oracle Database itself. To quote the inside cover 'Demo database -A full working copy of the demonstration database used in all examples throughout the book'Further on 'Software: o Personal Oracle8' I don't know how they can make this claim without the database engine. Don't buy this book expecting to get Personal Oracle8.

This book delivers on its promise to have the reader up and running with Oracle ASAP. This is a faster and more informative read than IDG's "Oracle For Dummies." If you have a fast Internet connection, download a trial copy of Personal Oracle8 software from Oracle's website rather than using the copy on this book's enclosed CD/ROM (I had a problem).

As a PC database developer, this book saved me from the perils of the Oracle documentation. The book helped me to define and use Oracle databases that I have been able to deploy at dozens of customer sites.
