The person who reads this book will be the most likely to succeed in any endevor where other people are involved. The ability to mirror someone's behavior and thus earn their confidence and trust is the skill that the reader will gain, if they take the concepts in this book to heart. All of the interpersonal skills a person has accumulated come together when applying the concepts of 'versitility'. It is the morter that holds everything together. Read the book that lays the foundation for all human behavior techniques and you will be able to effectivly motivate others to reach THEIR potential and help YOU get what you want.

The concept of Social Styles (aka Personal Styles) has been around for well over 20 years. It may have lost some of its buzz because it no longer qualifies as the latest flavor, but it is a concept that remains popular and is used widely because it offers a practical model of personality and communication. There are a number of books that address the Social Styles model, but this is the only one that reflects where is all started, from the authors who first popularized the concept. This is the essential Social Styles/Personal Styles volume.

I really enjoyed this book. It taught me many valuable lessons that I still use today. Unlike so many business and self-help books the conclusions presented in this book are based on research, not psycho-babble.

Is it a bit dry? Sure. But here's what you get for patiently studying the concepts: If you are serious about getting along with others, at home and at work, this book can help you develop advanced interpersonal skills that will serve you for a lifetime. That's value.

For example, the accountants and engineers at work used to drive me nuts with their demands for more and more detail, numbers were all they cared about. I'm in Marketing so I'm easily bored. I'd become frustrated, "Why can't they (my co-workers) see the larger picture? What can't they connect the dots, it's so obvious?" I found many people to be tedious, short-sighted, unwilling to make decisions and, most importantly, act! I even considered some to be a bit dim but I knew that was wrong, these were smart people. My wife sometimes fell into this category too. Yikes! I'd struggled with this for most of my life. So what's the deal?

Here's where this book really helped me and, in a way, changed my life. What this book taught me was these "types" of people were what Merrill calls, "Analytical." They just processed the world differently than I did. I think strategically and am a "Driver." I can take a bit of information and usually extrapolate the most likely outcomes. As a teacher once told me, "you anticipate well, you can see around the corner and most people can't." Some people need to see the evidence before reaching any conclusions. That's not a bad thing, in fact it's a good thing. I don't want my doctor, or my wife, jumping to ANY rash conclusions, something I've been known to do.

This book is a great presentation of the Personal Styles. If you want to go beyond the pop books and see the real research that went into this, this is the book to read.
