Book Description

June 1, 2001 0765702940 978-0765702944
There are many approaches to the treatment of patients with borderline personality disorder. In this fascinating volume, the editors interview the major proponents of these approaches. The book contains fourteen interviews with a diverse range of therapists. The questions are the same, but the answers are as different as the personalities of the respondents. They discuss the major principles of their treatment, their professional development, and their differences. The interviews also reveal the people behind the theories. What personal motives made them want to work with patients so often considered “difficult”? Why did they choose or develop the specific methods that they use? The therapists represented in this comprehensive volume are Gerald Adler, Salman Akhtar, Lorna Smith Benjamin, John Clarkin, Robert Cloninger, Arthur Freeman, Glenn Gabbard, Otto Kernberg, Marsha Linehan, John Livesley, James Masterson, Lawrence Rockland, Michael Stone, and Jeffrey Young.

These master clinicians explain what they would do in very specific situations, such as the middle-of-the-night suicidal phone call or the chance encounter with a patient at a social gathering. The answers are instructive, sometimes surprising, and always reflective of the differences and similarities of these great therapists. The editors have provided a contemporary picture of the many ways one can go about treating people with severe personality problems.

Editorial Reviews

Review

It's a kaleidoscope. With the turn of each chapter, the ever-changing mosaic ranges from the personal to the professional as each master clinician tells of the influences that formed and continue to shape his or her treatment orientation and current thinking. The successes, failures, and limitations of each approach are described by its leading proponent, as well as his or her views regarding the other methodologies. In interview form, this often very personal book reads like a dialogue between the therapists that is frank and surprisingly humorous. Consequently, it is a singular rarity: a clinical text that is both fun and informative and as close to a page-turner as a professional book can be. This book is a crosscut of the best thinking to date concerning the treatment of personality disorders. In the midst of reading it, I found my capacity to differentially diagnose a situation was enhanced and, to my surprise, I began integrating tactics and strategies from other treatment orientations into my own. Readers from every treatment stance will benefit from this book. They will be left with a deeper appreciation, not only of other approaches but also of their own. (Charles McCormack, MSW )

Few books in our profession are real page-turners, but this one is. Brilliantly conceived, Personalities is a unique collection of interviews of a select group of internationally renowned master clinicians by a similarly elite trio of master clinicians. All of the interviewees are challenged with a series of provocative questions about borderlines that demand honesty, authenticity, vulnerability, and self-exposure. What are the basic tenets of your practice? Are there inherent limitations in your approach? Which treatment have failed? Have you ever insisted that a treatment be terminated? What does your office look like? Most of the answers intrigue, many of them inspire, and a few of them shock. But all of them provide illuminating insight and clarity. It is indeed rare for the reader to be treated to such a deeply satisfying bird's-eye view of what really goes on behind the closed doors of master clinicians. A must-read for any therapist eager to garner pearls of wisdom about the art of working with borderlines. (Martha Stark, M.D. )
