Book Description

July 11, 2011
Melvin Hill Cemetery, established in 1823, is the final resting place for many early settlers of this rich farming hamlet in the Finger Lakes region of New York. Compiled with the intent of aiding genealogists and historians in their research, the author also hopes to preserve and glorify the lives of these men and women in the hearts and memories of later generations. All of the more than 230 individuals interred in this cemetery have been thoroughly researched. Family ancestries have been traced back to the first settlers to arrive in the area, and the most contemporary descendants have been recorded whenever possible. In addition to a brief history of the region, the author includes other introductory chapters on the organizational structure of the cemetery, funeral customs through the ages, and a chart and a map of the layout of the cemetery. Almost every entry includes the individual's name, the location of the plot, and the marker inscription, all of which is supplemented, when available, with photos and family lineages. The author compiled this data from published genealogies and histories, newspaper accounts, death records, probate records, war pension records, family researchers, scrapbooks and living relatives. A full name index is included. Surnames to be found in this book include: Allen, Anderson, Bigelow, Brusie, Burnett, Chandler, Clark, Cole, Colister, Crittenden, Davis, Drake, Flint, Gerow, Green, Hall, Hull, Hewett, Ingram (Ingraham), Jameson, Keeler, Keith, Lambert, Leland, Mangel, Marsh, Mattoon, Melvin, Niles, Northam, Ottley, Phillips, Rhodes, Ridley, Salisbury, Scott, Severance, Sheldon, Sherbourne, Smith, Spoor, Storms, Stratton, Swan, Sweet, Vrooman, Walthart, Washburn, Whitmore, Wilkins, and Willson. A special chapter has been set aside for war veterans buried at Melvin Hill.
