This successful text puts "personality" back into the personality course, integrating the classic insights of the personality theorists with modern research in a manner that will fascinate and captive students. Organized around eight basic aspects of personality-psychoanalytic, ego, biological, behaviorist, cognitive, trait, humanistic, and situational/interactionist-the text both explains the classic theories and also explores how the information applies to the student reader. The text presents a balanced, critical, yet optimistic approach. Personality encourages critical thinking about human nature. While holding the highest scientific standards, the text uses unique and provocative pedagogical devices (see below) to capture students' interest and bring the field of personality to life. It has been hailed as the best-written and most relevant personality textbook in the field.

From the Back Cover

How did Madonna transform from small-town girl to Material Girl? What drove Lorena Bobbit to her breaking point? Were people like these molded by their environment, or is their something inherent in one's personality that motivates certain behavioral patterns? Friedman and Schustack frame their book around the eight basic aspects of personality, using these principles to show the various ways our human complexity forms from developmental influences, such as biological predispositions, cognitive structures, and situational demands. Vignettes about modern cultural figures, along with substantial integration of cross-cultural and women's issues, build on the field of personality theory to provide a modern view that will challenge and fascinate all readers. Organized from the viewpoint that personality has eight basic aspects: psychoanalytic, ego, biological, behaviorist, cognitive, trait, humanistic, and situational. Psychologists and anyone else interested in issues of personality formation and development. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very clear, but lacks depth, August 17, 2000
By A Customer
I used this book for a course in personality, and therefore worked with this textbook for a good 16 weeks. The main plus with this book is that it breaks down theories to make them understandable, and then uses famous examples to illustrate them. Madonna and Hugh Grant are personalities most people are familiar with, and therefore makes the text easier to grasp.

The downside to this book is that it lacks depth in certain matters. Very important concepts need great detail, but because of the enormous field, it is impossible to go to depth in all aspects. Therefore I had to consult alternate sources to fully understand certain themes.

Overall, it was an easy textbook to work with, and I would recommend it as a tool to intruduce the field of personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just right, September 10, 2006

I teach undergrads in an urban university with varying degress of preparation for college. I reviewed many texts and finally chose Friedman because it is so clear. I wanted a college level but relatively uncomplicated book and this is it. I like the many comparative charts to help students understand similarities and differences in each approach. I also like that it covers themes (gender, culture, stress, love/hate) as well as broad theories, so it it like 2 books in one. For the right audience, this is the best book I found.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook, January 31, 2010
I bought this book as a "refresher" to all the various psychological theories, while heading into the final semester of social work graduate school. I am quite happy with this book. It is written for the lay person as well as the graduate student. I like how the authors provide a mini biography of the theorists, as it gives the reader a glimpse into their psyches. I found myself, for example, thinking, "Hmmm, no wonder Freud thought the way he did." It is an easy, yet highly informative read; I highly recommend it.
