3.0 out of 5 stars Very clear, but lacks depth, August 17, 2000
By A Customer
I used this book for a course in personality, and therefore worked with this textbook for a good 16 weeks. The main plus with this book is that it breaks down theories to make them understandable, and then uses famous examples to illustrate them. Madonna and Hugh Grant are personalities most people are familiar with, and therefore makes the text easier to grasp.

The downside to this book is that it lacks depth in certain matters. Very important concepts need great detail, but because of the enormous field, it is impossible to go to depth in all aspects. Therefore I had to consult alternate sources to fully understand certain themes.

Overall, it was an easy textbook to work with, and I would recommend it as a tool to intruduce the field of personality.

I teach undergrads in an urban university with varying degress of preparation for college. I reviewed many texts and finally chose Friedman because it is so clear. I wanted a college level but relatively uncomplicated book and this is it. I like the many comparative charts to help students understand similarities and differences in each approach. I also like that it covers themes (gender, culture, stress, love/hate) as well as broad theories, so it it like 2 books in one. For the right audience, this is the best book I found.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook, January 31, 2010
I bought this book as a "refresher" to all the various psychological theories, while heading into the final semester of social work graduate school. I am quite happy with this book. It is written for the lay person as well as the graduate student. I like how the authors provide a mini biography of the theorists, as it gives the reader a glimpse into their psyches. I found myself, for example, thinking, "Hmmm, no wonder Freud thought the way he did." It is an easy, yet highly informative read; I highly recommend it.
