5.0 out of 5 stars Just right
I teach undergrads in an urban university with varying degress of preparation for college. I reviewed many texts and finally chose Friedman because it is so clear. I wanted a college level but relatively uncomplicated book and this is it. I like the many comparative charts to help students understand similarities and differences in each approach. I also like that it...

I used this book for a course in personality, and therefore worked with this textbook for a good 16 weeks. The main plus with this book is that it breaks down theories to make them understandable, and then uses famous examples to illustrate them. Madonna and Hugh Grant are personalities most people are familiar with, and therefore makes the text easier to grasp.

The downside to this book is that it lacks depth in certain matters. Very important concepts need great detail, but because of the enormous field, it is impossible to go to depth in all aspects. Therefore I had to consult alternate sources to fully understand certain themes.

Overall, it was an easy textbook to work with, and I would recommend it as a tool to intruduce the field of personality.

I wanted a college level but relatively uncomplicated book and this is it. I like the many comparative charts to help students understand similarities and differences in each approach. I also like that it covers themes (gender, culture, stress, love/hate) as well as broad theories, so it it like 2 books in one. For the right audience, this is the best book I found.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Textbook, January 31, 2010
I bought this book as a "refresher" to all the various psychological theories, while heading into the final semester of social work graduate school. I am quite happy with this book. It is written for the lay person as well as the graduate student. I like how the authors provide a mini biography of the theorists, as it gives the reader a glimpse into their psyches. I found myself, for example, thinking, "Hmmm, no wonder Freud thought the way he did." It is an easy, yet highly informative read; I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Needed for a Class, February 14, 2010

I needed this book for a Psychology class, It's actually very interesting and well written. The author actually has a voice, as opposed to being a plainly scientific text.

This book is deceptively few pages. It is very dense in subject matter. It is very good and well written. It isn't always as well organized as I would like, but the major psychological theories of personality are described well with plenty of illustrative examples mostly from real world current events or actual case studies. The biographical material about various theorists is also enlightening. I rate it excellent!

2.0 out of 5 stars Where's the Personality, February 19, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Of all the psychology books I have read, I must say that this is the dryest, most monotone, and difficult reads that I have encountered. I cannot say that I would not recommend this book, however, I'd surely look for something else first.

3.0 out of 5 stars PERSONALITY DEFINED & EXPLAINED, December 16, 2011
By
Gian Fiero (Los Angeles, California) - See all my reviews

Personality is the scientific study of the psychological forces that make people uniquely themselves. Ironically, one of the more intriquing aspects of this book is that it points out that our personalities are subject to change based upon the person, people, and situations we are exposed to. The book is dedicated to explaining why. Despite being well-written, easy to read, and strategically incorporating the work of popular theorists as Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, and others, it doesn't evolve in terms of depth. Overall, it's an interesting book, but not a MUST have for your library.

The book was a little more beat up on the outside than I would have preferred. Aside from that, the book was in excellent condition inside and it came very quickly!
