Its two major sections discuss the fundamental issues of personality, tracing the origins of the field in modern research, and examining the topics studied by contemporary psychologists. The origins of personality in heredity, the structure of the brain, gender, and childhood are probed. Other sections of the book look at the manifestations and effects of personality in morality, sex roles, aggression, and relationship with others. All of these topics have broader relevance to other areas of psychology, as they focus on the age-old question of defining what makes a person an individual.

About the Author
Dr. Derlega is Professor of Psychology at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia. His research interests focus on self-disclosure in close relationships, coping with chronic diseases (especially HIV/AIDS), and gender roles. Dr. Derlega has written and/or edited a number of books on self-disclosure, social interaction and privacy issues in living with HIV, and gender and close relationships. His most recent book (with Kathryn Greene, Gust Yep, and Sandra Petronio) is, "PRIVACY AND DISCLOSURE OF HIV IN INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP: A SOURCEBOOK FOR RESEARCHERS AND PRACTITIONERS."

Why would anyone want to buy the outdated, clinical-approach-only personality textbooks that are out there when they can have an updated, truly PERSONALITY-ORIENTED personality textbook such as this. This book goes into personality development in greater depth, tying current research and theory together. Written by experts in the field of personality / social psychology, this is a textbook for those who want to actually learn about or teach PERSONALITY development. If you want a clinical/therapy- oriented approach to personality, this text is not for you. If you want an excellent introductory textbook about personality development theories and contemporary research, snap this book up immediately.
