Book Description

Praise for Personality-Guided Therapy

"A comprehensive, innovative approach to the treatment of syndromal and personality disorders. This volume is a 'must read' for students as well as mental health professionals."--Aaron T. Beck, MD, University Professor of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania

"[Millon] masterfully integrates disparate systems of psychotherapy, as well as personality theory and clinical practice, in reminding us that psychotherapy is not, and never will be, a disembodied treatment of simple disorders, but rather textured interpersonal relationships with complex people. Brilliant in concept and amazing in scope!"--John C. Norcross, PhD, University of Scranton, President-elect, APA Division of Psychotherapy

"His freshly conceived focus on tailoring treatment modalities to fit individual patient's personality pattern adds an important new dimension to the psychological intervention literature."--Irving B. Weiner, PhD, University of South Florida

"[This book] provides par excellence the type of integrative thinking clinicians need, our training program should utilize, and our field is striving for."--John F. Clarkin, PhD, New York Hospital, Cornell Medical Center

"Students of various disciplines, as well as seasoned mental health professionals, will undoubtedly return again and again to this volume to glean a deeper understanding of personality functioning and to develop a greater appreciation of how to approach these disorders therapeutically. This volume is sure to prove a classic in the field."--Jeffrey J. Magnavita, PhD, ABPP, Connecticut Center for Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reading, March 27, 2000

Finally a book that talks about treatment of the individual within the context of a diagnosis. This is a worthwhile book for both the seasoned clinician and the student craving more knowledge and understanding.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good read for the client who desires a better understaning as well, July 18, 2007

TS "Dutchman" (Fort Collins, Colorado United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Personality-Guided Therapy (Wiley Series on Personality Process (Hardcover)
As a lay person who suffers from an avoidant personality, along with some overlapt into areas like OCD I find this book a good read as I struggle to better understand and work aloside my therapist to continue to make progress in my batter to overcome long term self imposed walls. My therapist knows I read such refernces she had kidded me about my having enough knowledge to teach a graduate level class on personality disorders. She was the one who first got me connected with the writings of Millon. I must say of all of Millon's works I have read so far this one seems to be written at a level that is easier for the lay person or perhaps for therapist that come from outside the clinical psychology background to get a good feel for many of the find points of the disorders that can sometimes get lost in his other works if you don't have a good strong background going in. The individual cases are intereesting. While none of the sample avoidant cases really hit home with me as somone who sufferns from an avoidant personality I could still see where the approach being used was coming from and might work well for some others. Over the years prior to treatment I managed to make a lot of progress in numerous areas but still am working nove for about 18 months with my therpist to continue to grow and experience things that at 54 I though I would most likley never experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good resource for counselors, April 18, 2011

All counselors would benefit from reading Millon's books. Not a light read. Read them from the index in not cover to cover.
