Book Description

0131469037 978-0131469037 August 22, 1997 1

This book presents personality from the perspective of existing research. It provides an overview of personality research and demonstrates the relationship between research and real individuals. Readers are encouraged to explore the relationship between the research and their own personalities. It also introduces primary source literature in personality psychology by covering the content, methods, and issues in the journals with minimal jargon. Personality Psychology: The Science of Individuality presents content on its own merits rather than forcing it to fit existing theories. Readers avoid the sometimes inaccurate connections to historical theories found in other books on personality. The book also includes discussions often neglected in other books, such as entire separate chapters on intelligence and cognitive style, the unconscious, and evolutionary personality psychology. Readers will learn important areas in enough depth to appreciate the issues and complexities. The book always attempts to make clear why a particular study is important. This may facilitate the readers' ability to study the subject further. Chapter Two includes a short personality questionnaire designed to measure the Big 5 factors. Since discussions of methodology refer back to the Big 5 factors throughout the book, readers benefit by having a personal involvement through their scores on the questionnaire. It may also help to make some of the material personally relevant. A valuable book for any reader interested in understanding the existing research into personality, or who wishes to understand more about his or her own personality.

5.0 out of 5 stars best of available, March 10, 2003

This review is from: Personality Psychology: Science of Individuality (Paperback)
A textbook of personality psychology, but not of a traditional "theories of personality (Freud-Jung-Rogers-Maslow)" type. This is good, because this way it represents what is really going on in personality psychology, instead of what has been going on. One might want a better integration, but this simply does not exist as yet. The two alternative books that one might consider (and there are only two of them) are "Personality" by Caprara and Cervone (social cognitive approaches are better represented but almost no biology at all), and "Personality traits" by Matthews and Deary (has a narrower scope). All other personality textbooks are just outdated (starting from the table of contents).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book !!!, May 18, 2008

This review is from: Personality Psychology: Science of Individuality (Paperback)
I have had an interest in personality for some time, but tired of books that seem to have simplistic theories based off 'folk knowledge' or just random speculation. MBTI theory is interesting, an (E/I)NFP myself, but this book was truly great b/c, as the authors state- Freud, Jung and others may have nice theories, but these authors are interested in the scientific approach- objective, tested by hard data, and controlled experiments. Not that the book is unreadable- I found it very easy to follow- and fascinating b/c - again- not just theories- but paradigms backed by experimental data. A must read for anyone seriously interested in personality!! Among the areas I found fascinating was the research on identical/fraternal twins reared apart/together to see the correlations btw the twins interests, career choices, extroversion etc...and tease out how much is driven by genes vs. nurture & choice. And the Big 5- the more scientific approach to arriving at and validating a view of personality akin MBTI. I read it cover to cover & enjoyed every piece of it! I discovered this gem of a book from the site- [..]- also an Excellent site & resource!
