3.0 out of 5 stars Cute, but a bit lacking
PERSONALS is a musical comedy revue about modern dating. I've never seen the show, so my review is only on the songs, not the sketches and monologues also included in the show.

The book and lyrics are by David Crane, Seth Friedman, and Marta Kauffman. The composers are various: Stephen Schwartz (GODSPELL, CHILDREN OF EDEN, POCOHONTAS), Alan Menken (LITTLE...

I was in London with some friends last year and had tickets to the show, but unfortunately I got ill and was unable to go. My friends ranted and raved so much about the show that I hated my self for not going. Ironically enough, for my birthday I received the CD and was astonished by the music and the substance to the lyrics. I felt as if I had seen the show because the lyrics were so tightly connected to the story line and the personality of the charicters in the CD and the order in which the songs were compiled made me feel as if the play was being recreated on the CD. Should we call this a CD or an audio proformance of the show. If you ever go to London, don't make the mistake I made by not attending the show even if you are sick and feeling miserable. Hats off to the preformers. I wish I could sing like all of you. Thank you for bringing the play to the U.S. via your CD. I don't even think the shows on Broadway could deliver the story like the CD. P.S. This CD is nowhere near elevator music or rest and relaxation music before bedtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every major theater venue should mount a production!, March 14, 1999

Personals is a delightful, entertaining, and provocative musical. Songs are catchy, memorable, and the CD features great voices and instrumentals. I saw the original production off-Broadway and waited for years for this recording. At last! The highlights of the show are the songs by Joel and Seth Friedman. They have a gift for melodic writing and their songs abound with musical twists and turns that make them, by far, the most rewarding, moving, and creative work on the CD. I hope to hear more from them!

Personals is a clever weave of modern situations, childish adult behaviour and moving emotions. Having directed this great musical revue twice for the 1992-93 season of Olympic Theatre Arts (Sequim Washington) for an AIDS benefit it was exciting to find that this fun musical comedy was finally recorded to be shared with anyone who has not had the opportunity to attend a production of this show. The cast of this production present this revue brilliantly with just the right amount of sparkle, pathos and desperation. I strongly recommend this show to any production company needing a modern revue which will not only showcase the talents of your performers, but also challenge your audience to try to keep a straight face. Buy this, play this and memorize the words before you set out into the dating scene. Or for that matter, before re-entering the dating scene.

5.0 out of 5 stars Personals is worthy of revivals in all major theater venues, March 13, 1999

Personals is one of the most imaginative and delightful musicals I've heard. I attended performances during the original run in New York and awaited this album for years. At last. And, a great recording as well. In particular, I found the songs written by Joel and Seth Friedman the highlights of the show. They have a great gift for melody and musical twists and turns abound. Coupled with an incisive wit and insight into human vulnerabilities, their songs hit their mark.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Personal Favorite, July 2, 2000

This review is from: Personals: The Comedy Musical Revue (1998 Original London Cast) (Audio CD)
I was in London on vacation for a week and had the opportunity to watch Personals, which had been recommended to me by a friend. (Thanks a buh-jillion, Jen!) I knew that if I didn't purchase this cd I'd have to stay a few months longer to catch the show several hundred more times until a serious case of "Last Song Syndrome" overwhelms me, and effectively leads me to the unfortunate demise of insanity. Thank the heavens there is a soundtrack! Now I can bring the musical back home with me and conveniently go crazy there! The songs reach out to you, speak to you, tickle you (a lot!), make you cry and evoke several other feelings I'd rather not mention (check out track 05! rowr!). Overall, I'd have to say this cd is a MUST BUY not only for theater enthusiasts such as myself, but anyone else who's fallen in love, fallen out, is still in the process of falling in love, has yet to fall in love, or has a fetish for little people (you'll understand when you listen to it, hehe! Mr. Bleany, you da man!). And if that still doen't convince you that this is a worthwhile purchase, maybe this will: it's from the creators of the widely-acclaimed Friends sitcom. C'mon, don't tell me you're still not drooling and lapping your lips! On a more serious note, though, the songs do offer deep and extremely witty insights on this human phenomenon we affectionately allude the heart to. So go buy the cd now! Ney, go buy it five minutes ago! You won't be dissapointed. And after that, go watch the show to complete the experience!:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome Show, October 27, 2005
This review is from: Personals: The Comedy Musical Revue (1998 Original London Cast) (Audio CD)
I was in the Australian Premiere of the show and loved it, the sketches and the monologues were hilarious. The cd itself is also fantastic with the songs a variety of genres and tempos. Imagine my Surprise and Some things don't end, the two nicest songs on the cd.

Well worth a listen to!

5.0 out of 5 stars As touching and funny as the TV show Friends (same writers), March 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Personals: The Comedy Musical Revue (1998 Original London Cast) (Audio CD)
A theatregoer from Long Island saw the show in London. It was fast-paced, the music was lively and memorable, and the script was funny! Cast members were perfect for their parts -- I understand it will open on the West End sometime this summer and perhaps come to NY in the fall. If you are a fan of the TV show Friends, it will be easy for you to recognize their influence in this script. Go buy it! You'll love it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Get "Personals" and find fulfillment., March 10, 1999

This review is from: Personals: The Comedy Musical Revue (1998 Original London Cast) (Audio CD)
This CD is from the London production of a U.S. play. It was the first project of the people who created the "Friends" sitcom.

It's about people who answer personal ads and the situations they get into. It's funny and it has good music. I can't wait for the play to reopen on the West End.
