5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have SAP HR book
This is the first English SAP HR functional book from SAP Press. I found it very well organized and the examples in the book very helpful. It covers the basic HR concepts as well as some advanced topics such as e-Learning. It is a must have book for SAP HR professionals.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Book! But needs translation help
This is a very good book, providing a strong overview of the areas contained in Personnel Development.
The biggest issue I have is that the translation from German to English leaves much to be desired. The problem is that the wording makes it difficult to get into the reading flow. I often had to stop and try to determine what the sentence really meant. There...

This review is from: HR Personnel Planning and Development Using SAP (Hardcover)
This book provided good process flows under each module discussed. There are some good tips on best practices, and what to watch out for in terms of limitations with the system. I appreciated the fact that it had 4.7 functionalities incorporated.

This is a very good book, providing a strong overview of the areas contained in Personnel Development.
The biggest issue I have is that the translation from German to English leaves much to be desired. The problem is that the wording makes it difficult to get into the reading flow. I often had to stop and try to determine what the sentence really meant. There were even sentences that were entirely unintelligible.
The other issue I had with the book was that the graphics were very weak in that they were not clear on their own as to meaning, and were not explained in the associated text.
I would still recommend this book as a strong overview, but readers should be aware of the challenges.

1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor translation from German to English, August 5, 2009
This review is from: HR Personnel Planning and Development Using SAP (Hardcover)
I am an experienced SAP HR consultant. I have more than 7 years experience with SAP HR.

Unfortunately, the translation of the original German text in this book to English was very poor. I do not claim to be a master of English language grammar. However, the translation of this book is abysmal. The translation services on this book (according to the copyright page) were provided by Lemoine International, Inc. in Salt Lake City, UT. I've written them a note expressing my disappointment with the poor quality.

Here's just a couple of examples:

Page 101: "Essentially the setup of the organizational management is possible in a productive system, that is, the organizational structure can be incorporated into a productive system and changed."

Translation: Organizational Management can be maintained in the production system.

Page 33: "Among other things, the infotype 0001 permits the assignment of employees to organizational units, positions, and jobs. This is also possible without using organizational management. The creation of the corresponding organization objects is possible via the customizing of the infotype in simple tables. Thus, however, no true structure can be created. Therefore, and due to the additional functionalities, the deployment of organizational management is absolutely recommended at the latest with a company of 1000 employees or more. Even for smaller companies, this often makes sense - one should then see that the maintenance does not become an end in itself; rather, instead, it should occur based on simpler, more pragmatic conventions."

Translation: Infotype 0001 assigns employees to organizational units, positions and jobs. You can build these jobs in simple tables, but you can't build a true structure this way. You should really deploy organizational management if your company has 1000 employees or more."

Can you learn something from this book? Yes. Will you have to cut through a bunch of poor-quality translation? Yes.

Should you have to do this for a book this expensive? No way.
