Book Description

June 15, 2005
Since no two individuals are ever affected by prenatal alcohol exposure exactly the same way, the goal of this book is to provide specialized methods designed for the patient?s unique abilities as opposed to a generalized FASD approach. Most of the ideas in this book have been long established in foundation and practice by the real experts ? parents. The OBD 3 Step Plan of Action! addresses these issues and provides an easy to follow guide to understanding a very complex medical diagnosis of organic brain dysfunction and encourages caregivers to construct and implement their own strategies based on factual information and not guesswork. The focus is on identification and promotion of an individual?s strengths, while respecting their challenges and finding some humour at the end of the day.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Finally here is a book to help parents, caregivers and professionals with daily living and care for those children affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. This excellent book is the first one I have seen that guides parents after the diagnosis is made and helps them to understand the different areas of brain dysfunction, the practical implications in the daily living and an excellent plan of action for critical issues in these children s lives. The book is filled with very good and practical advice not only for children but also for the young adults transitioning to the adult world. Liz Lawryk brings her experience forward with a great sense of humour, and most particularly with lots of hope for a possible positive outcome. This is a book I would recommend to all parents, caregivers and professional dealing with children and adults affected by FASD. --Dr. Heidemarie Schroter, MD,FRCPC

Finding Perspective ... Raising Successful Children Affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder" is a wonderful meld of up-to-date information about the wide array of FASD symptoms and practical strategies and interventions. Liz Lawryk has succeeded in clearly conveying the complexity of these children through numerous case examples from her own practice, as well as drawing upon the scientific literature. She has the ability to interpret seemingly confusing or even bizarre behaviors in the context of CNS dysfunction, and then offers viable, creative interventions that any parent or caregiver of a child with FASD will find useful. Suffused throughout the book is Ms. Lawryk's compassion for these children and their families, her insistence that we highlight and celebrate their many strengths, and her unique sense of humour. This book is not only useful but a delight to read - I recommend it most highly. --John Pearce, PhD, RPsych.

An inspirational, encouraging and exceptionally resourceful work of art! As parents of children of FASD special needs, you give us a rainbow of hope in the pages of this awesome book! --Nancy and Jim McPhee, Foster and Adoptive Parents

My adopted daughter has not yet been diagnosed (but i am sure she will be) , but in reading this book I am already implementing some of the suggestions and ideas for behavioral change. I think anyone with a child with FASD would greatly benefit in understanding the problem and correcting behavioral issues.

5.0 out of 5 stars PRICELESS FASD INFORMATION, February 20, 2011
This review is from: Finding Perspective... Raising Successful Children Affected by Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (Paperback)
Ms. Lawryk presents OBD - a 3 step action plan to help parents and professionals navigate caregiving for children with fetal alcohol, but more importantly her ideas allow for the development of a person with FASDs to begin to navigate into adulthood with a better understanding of how they think, react and the reason behind those reactions. Well done Liz, I am pleased to recommend this book.
