Book Description

November 13, 2005 0205374530 978-0205374533 1

This collection of essays from across disciplines introduces students to the range and diversity of urban society throughout history, from the ancient world through the present. The book looks at cities representing three archetypes: Preindustrial, Industrial, and Postindustrial, and includes seminal pieces by classical and contemporary urban scholars. These essays trace the shifts in economic production from primary (agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry) to secondary (manufacturing), tertiary (financial, real estate, clerical), and quarternary (information and communication technology sectors) sectors. Efren N. Padilla is director of the Urban Studies Program at California State University-Hayward.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the book for Preindustrial cities, May 16, 2008
By
This review is from: Perspectives on Urban Society: Preindustrial to Postindustrial (Paperback)
Its amazing that the editor could find so many outdated papers on preindustrial cities to include. These chapters could have been used in a reader from about 1960. Archaeologists and historians have learned a lot about preindustrial cities since then, but one would never know it from these chapters. But maybe the term "preindustrial" is meant to apply to the date of the articles, in addition to the date of the cities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Arrived quickly and in great condition, February 4, 2011

I needed this textbook for a class and this one was offered for a substantial savings over the college bookstore. It arrived in plenty of time and was in "like new" condition. I would definitely buy from this seller again, unlike eCampus, who lists books for sale and ready to ship, when they don't actually have them in stock. But, that's another story. This seller is trustworthy and honest. That goes a long way in my book when you're buying stuff online.
