Gr 2-6-Colorful and attractive offerings with more information about holidays than is usually found in books on these countries. Each title begins with a two-page spread about the nation, including a map, and then lists its major festivals by season. Five of these celebrations are then described in detail, followed by one or two craft projects and a recipe. Brief glossaries define words that appear in boldface in the texts and pronunciation is given for foreign words. The layouts are attractive, with full-color photographs on every page and plenty of white space. Small boxes headed "Think about this" ask questions or give additional information. Both books have sketchy lists for further reading that include nonprint media. Faith Winchester's Hispanic Holidays (Bridgestone, 1996) discusses eight holidays, only one of which is duplicated in Peru. The text is simpler, with much less detail, only one photograph per holiday, and just one craft activity.-Pam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ
