Book Description

3540002189 978-3540002185 August 5, 2003 2nd

This book describes a new class of computing devices which are becoming omnipresent in every day life. They make information access and processing easily available for everyone from anywhere at any time. Mobility, wireless connectivity, di- versity, and ease-of-use are the magic keywords of Pervasive and Ubiquitous Computing. The book covers these front-end devices as well as their operating systems and the back-end infrastructure which integrate these pervasive components into a seamless IT world. A strong emphasis is placed on the underlying technologies and standards applied when building up pervasive solutions. These fundamental topics include commonly used terms such as XML, WAP, UMTS, GPRS, Bluetooth, Jini, transcoding, and cryptography, to mention just a few. Voice, Web Application Servers, Portals, Web Services, and Synchronized and Device Management are new in the second edition.
Besides a comprehensive state-of-the-art description of the Pervasive Computing technology itself, this book gives an overview of today's real-life applications and accompanying service offerings. M-Commerce, e-Business, networked home, travel, and finance are exciting examples of applied Ubiquitous Computing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good book on technologies, September 26, 2001
By
David Grozny (San Diego, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This book explains new technologies in a very simple and informative way. It would have been nice to find some more links to business, but this seems not to be the target market. Ideal for engineers that need to get an update on technologies.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for starter and reviewer, January 14, 2001
By
This book gives you an overview of new devices and techniques available with the up-to-date information. However, the information is not really depth, but it is enough to give a brief idea. This book is a very good choice for professional who wants to know about the new technologies but without the necessity to have a detailed knowledge. This book is really suitable for everyone. For example, if you want to know whether you need to buy Playstation 2 right now, you may want to compare with the 'future' machine from Microsoft: XBox and Nintendo's Dolphin (codename: nCube) as comparison.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview and nicely written, July 2, 2009

Pervasive Computing: The Mobile World (Springer Professional Computing)
This book gives a great overview on devices, technology and explains the fundamental thought of mobile computing. Despite the fact, that the book is on the market since a while, the information is still accurate and the texts are fun to read! Again, a good overview and background information.
