Breath-taking Finnish melodic metal with a twist ...,
By Zakk Wong (Selangor, Malaysia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Pervertigo (Audio CD)
Excellent melodic metal with tons of variation, interesting riffing and superbly composed melodies would best describe the album. The Children of Bodom-ish hints are still there, but they're no longer as evident as their debut. The songs are so much more progressive, oozing with melodies (did I mention that these guys write songs with SOLID melodies?) and varied tempos. There are some speedy metal tracks, sometimes even bordering on the intensity of thrash and some slow ballads which really makes this a thoroughly enjoyable listen. The contrasting styles of the clean and gruff vocals (with clean vocals handled by the fine chap from DreamEvil) certainly adds more spice into their music. The lyrics and song titles are absolutely hilarious too, and the image of the band really reminds me of Sweden's quirky prog metal outfit, A.C.T. The production here is top notch as well, with everything perfectly balanced in the mix. The keyboard work here is highly commendable and this really adds to the mood and atmosphere of the songs. Highlights for me are definitely the title track and No Nothing. My only complain is that the album was too short. Nevertheless, that's what the "repeat" button is for. I'm definitely curious to find out more about the Japanese bonus track. Essential purchase for any melodic metal fan ...

Throne Of Chaos, Pervertigo. This album is a terrific masterpiece of metal. Their style has progressed quite alot since Menace And Prayer, so much in fact that they really can't be compared to sounding like Children Of Bodom anymore. Now I'll mention some line-up differences. Taneli Kiljunen who did all the vocals on Menace And Prayer, now concentrating on guitar only which is by the way superb. Which means the vocal slot was open, so they get none other than Niklas Isfeldt of (Dream Evil) and Pasi Nykänen to fill the role. Their vocal trade-off's are done correctly, instead of singing harsh, and then clean for the chorus, they mix it around quite nicely. Taneli also brings back his vocals on "Sleep" Now I've heard lots of people complaining about this album because it is such a change and alot of people don't like the idea of clean vocals in "melodic/death". I on the other hand think it's great. It adds a new dimension to the music. Back to Pasi & Niklas for a sec...I'm not sure if either of them will appear on their 3rd album. As of now they are both listed as session members. This album offers plenty of variety in the songs. The only downfall to this album is that it's too short. To sum this all up, the album is worth every cent the store charges you for it. Pick it up now, If your mind isn't clouded by what everyone else says on what bands are supposed to sound like, you'll enjoy this, I gurantee it.

I'm a fan of everything from pop to country to black metal. I must say this is quite a good album. I didn't give it a 5 because I do not prefer the clean vocals. If the album was made with strictly raw screaming vocals I would have been perfectly happy. Note, I said perfectly happy. I am still very happy with this purchase. The guitars are just amazing. These guys have a great sense of humor, too. Some of the songs are just great lyrically because it isn't typical scary black metal. It's a great album with great range from soft to heavy... both vocally and musically. Buy this today!
