Black Magic has a fixing agent to set the color on black and dark color garments. It works better than I was expecting. I used to use Woolite For Darks on my dark colors. After buying a front loading Miele washer, I needed to change to HE type detergents. I don't know how it works, but my blacks actually look blacker after using Black Magic on them. (The actual product is a creamy white color.)

Only two things keeps me from giving this product 5 stars. The fixing agent mentioned above makes your clothes come out smelling like hair dye. (An extra rinse cycle will remove most of the smell.)

The other problem is that Black Magic contains enzymes to help it clean. That means it can't be used on wool, silk and other fibers that are damaged by enzymes. I'm very disappointed that I can't use this product on dark silk which always fades rapidly in the wash.

This is a good product to prevent black or dark colours from fading. The only drawback is that the setting agent has an mildly unpleasant smell. In my opinion, an additional rinse cycle solves the problem. Not exactly eco friendly when an extra rinse is required, but it gets the job done.

Did what it promised - my blacks stayed nice and black, seemed to help with some fading, but did not discolor other darks. Very nice.

I wear a lot of black for work as does my son who is very nit picky about his clothes fading. I have always used the Woolite for dark colors but I ordered 2 bottles of Black Magic to see if it worked better. I am truly amazed by this product and have never seen anything like it. My black clothes that had faded slightly that I have washed in Perwoll have actually been "re-blackened" and the black clothes that are not faded stay as black as black can be every time they are washed therefore they look brand new. I highly. recommend this for anyone who wants to keep their black/dark clothes their original color. Some comments say this is expensive but I don't agree, you don't use much and it's worth it no matter how much it costs to save from having to toss faded clothes.

Bought and used it for the first time on a clearly non-colorfast bedspread purchased in India as gift for me that is black, bright orange and deep red on a cream colored background. I was afraid I'd have to dry clean it if I didn't want it to fade or for the colors to run, but Black Magic left it looking perfect. None of the colors ran and the black didn't fade. What a find!

A pricy product but very effective in keeping dark clothes looking new. A mere cap full per load of dark/black clothes is all needed. A must for black or very dark jeans!!

Perwoll black works very well for the black part. Even makes slightly faded black look blacker. However, I found that it does not clean very well. With any spots or dirt, it is necessary to add something like Woolite to ensure the clothes are really clean. Also, it is inordinately expensive, I think.

Loved the product! Left my darks looking great. Also leaves a plesant scent on my clothes. Try it!

Saw this product mentioned in "Lucky Magazine", ordered three bottles and used some for the first time yesterday. Although I found the directions for use quite intimidating and somewhat difficult to understand (measurements are in "ml" and directions are based on soft, medium or hard water) I took my chances on guessing how much to use. So far I highly recommend this product and was quite impressed with the results. Even though the directions specify hand washing, I washed four pairs of pants in my washing machine on the gentle, slow cycle (pants have a blend of rayon, nylon and spandex). In the past these same types of pants have usually shrunk in size and faded considerably). I threw the pants in my dryer for about five minutes then hung to continue drying. This product has a pleasant smell - clothes smelled fresh and were very soft and clean after washing.

I'd like to rate this a "5" but am only raiting it a "4" at this time because I have only used it once. Will have to wait and see what the results are after repeated washings of the same items.

Very impressed with how this product works! Even my black garments that were beginning to fade now look crisp and new again. I wasn't sure if the product would really be worth it's price, but I took a chance based on the good reviews and am very happy I did! Also I didn't note any instances of shrinkage from using it either, which was another concern of mine.

The smell also isn't at all as bad as I thought it would be, based on the comments I've read here. I would say it doesn't smell so much like hair dye as it has a very strong old-fashioned perfume smell. When I think of hair dye odor, I always think of ammonia. This doesn't smell like ammonia at all. More powdery instead.
