Our bed is very high and our dogs are aging, thus, the choice to purchase stairs. We wanted wooden stairs with attached "carpet runners" but could find none manufactured to our height requirement - then we discovered the Pet Gear Soft Step III in a search here on Amazon. Although the service from Amazon was stellar (as usual), the Pet Gear Soft Step stairs were quite disappointing.

Issues:
1) cover of box recommends small pet use vs. description as ok for large dog (to 150lbs);
2) the cover is slipperly, thin and not a snug fit - no "grab-ability" necessary for climbing;
3) the four plastic "feet tabs" on stair base pieces are NOT non-skid;
4) individual pieces are merely hard plastic with hollow cores - for a 150lb dog?
5) steps may seem wide but not for a large breed;
6) our steps would not assemble fully - 2 pieces would not attach - and those that did attach, we did not find they "snapped" together.
7) steps slope downward - older dogs are going to fall on these at some point defeating the purpose of providing a safe alternative for dogs.

Bottom line: NOT recommended for large or giant breeds. I am not sure I would recommend for even large medium breeds.

OUR SOLUTION: We bought a covered bench from a local furniture store for the base of our bed: it hides the toys and blankets inside, has a wonderfully cushioned top, is adjustable 13 - 16" high (feet may be removed) and no training required (they go up and down with no hesitation). Oh, and we bought microfiber material so it cleans up with Shout wipes and we can have it re-covered ensuring years of use!

I bought this to put next to the bed. The bed is a little higher and the dog needed help. I was not expecting it to be a hard plastic unit covered with a covering. I was hoping it would be softer so if it was kicked during the night. Also, the dog was hesitant going up the stairs, the first time up, she slightly tipped as she tried going up them and was then afraid to use it after that. It is very light and a bigger dog might tip as walking up it. Its a good concept, good product but not what I expected to receive, description did not tell me it was a hollow plastic unit.

See how nice & neat it all looks - like it's "soft" - it's not. The base is plastic, which is ok, and can be put together quite easily (took me half an inning - I was listening to baseball), except I did need to use a rubber mallet because some of the pegs were slightly bigger than the holes. Then there is this cheap piece of material that fits over the plastic frame and does not fit anywhere near as good as the one in the picture does. If it were half the price, I would have given it more stars, but at this price, it's a pretty crummy looking thing.

The assembly directions are in picture form, groan, which can sometimes be a little confusing at first. Once you lay everything out just study the picture pretty carefully and it will go together fast. The cover was easy to put on and there was plenty of fabric to cover the whole thing well. The steps do have a downward slant like one reviewer said, but I think that is to facilitate a dogs natural gate. I have a little 9lb Papillon who can easily leap up 26 inches to the bed, but I was worried she'd hurt a leg leaping down at 9 years old now. It took a half hour to train her to use it correctly and to slow down and not leap down from the top step. The tough part was teaching her to bring her toys up the stairs, she has never used steps before. Papillons are very smart little dogs, but with patience and a favorite toy I think any dog could be trained to use these pretty fast. The steps are secure and do not wobble, they might be a bit narrow for larger dogs to feel secure but for small to medium dogs the width is fine. Be sure to snap every piece into the holes leaving no gaps and it will end up feeling solid. It will make the dog feel secure if it is put together right and the bottom stabilizer piece is securely in both holes when you finish the assembly. I can't say if it will hold a 150 lb dog like advertised, but if your dog is really big I would spend the money and get something more heavy duty.

I ordered these for my dog after looking at them in a local shop. They are supposed to have carpet treads on the stairs and then the cover over top of that. The cover is removable. The stairs are a slick plastic. Without the carpet treads, the cover slides around, and the dog slips. Also, you're supposed to be able to remove the cover and use it without the cover. That's impossible because there are indents for the carpet treads that are missing and the plastic itself is slippery. I emailed the company and am waiting to see if they are going to provide me with the carpet treads, otherwise these will be going back and I will buy them from my local store, with all the parts intact.

UPDATE: I contacted the manufacturer, Pet Gear, and they took care of me. They sent the carpet treads and we installed them. It took a few times of enticing my dog with treats but now she goes up and down them like a champ, with no slipping or sliding.

I deducted 1 star only because the instructions for putting it together are not the best. The pictures were blurry and I was pretty much on my own. I did however manage to put it together in about 1 hr. Nothing about the cover so you are on your own there too. The steps are very sturdy and the perfect height for a couch. I bought it for a toy dog, but it is designed so that a large dog would be able to use it also with no trouble.
