WOW...what an awesome album,
By
This review is from: Pet Grief (Audio CD)
Pet Grief is an incredible album from beginning to end. In my opinion, it's best listened to in one sitting...this album is truly an experience. For those who learned of the Radio Dept. from Marie Antoinette, this cd doesn't have the songs from Marie Antoinette on it, but if you liked those songs, you should like this album too. Beautiful hazy guitars, driving rhythms, electronic warmth, and gorgeously hidden vocals make this an album like no other. Very reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine and similar bands. This is just an all around wonderful piece of work. Pick it up!

This is seriously one of the best albums I've heard in years and years...proof that big production on a record means absolutely nothing if you have brilliant songs. Packed so full with dripping, gorgeous melody that it almost makes you sick on it..like eating too much chocolate. Truly stunning, achingly beautifull and inspiring..whatever, I'm going for another listen and to float off into space!

Shimmering melancholy guitars harken to the spirit of The Smiths but with a moody, blissed-out update. Fans of Radio Dept. won't be disappointed in what is perhaps their most ambitious album, grand and epic, almost a dozen solid songs. If you enjoy the bright, sometimes dolorous Swedish pop sound, you might want to check out Ronderlin, Wan Light, Jans Lekman, Montgolfier Brothers, and Blue Boy.

Noisepop At It's Finest,

Taking a night drive through the city and hearing the rain patter on the roof while I enshroud my car with the lush melodic sounds of the Radio Dept's second album is an experience I will never forget. There is something about this group that stands out above the rest, and 2006's Pet Grief is no exception. While considerably more mellow and moody than the Radio Dept's first LP, Lesser Matters, Pet Grief features articulate use of MIDI and less guitar-heavy music.
While each track is a delicacy, "What Will Give" has to be my favorite. The honesty and sensitivity of the keyboards that texture this song build the emotional level of the album, and help you soar on your listening journey through the clouds, and then back down to earth at the album's end. If you enjoy Shoegaze and Dreampop, this album is a must have.

Pet Grief,

Pet Grief being The Radio Dept's 2nd studio album and 2006 release is a mix of dream pop, indie pop and shoegaze. The album was met with positive reviews and Allmusic gave it 3.5/5. All the lyrics are included in the booklet but it contains no photographs but does have a list over whom plays what on the album. 4/5.

I can't believe how unknown this band appears to be in the US. This is astonishingly beautiful ethereal dream pop with outstanding lyrics. I know I'll be listening to this record 20 years from now. Just download to "Tell" and you'll want to buy it. I cannot wait to see them live.

Radio Department is phenomenal. I am a writer for 2 music magazines and I can say this sound is beautiful English rock; sensual & sweet to the ear and soul. Great foreground or background music. It lifts you up in its clean guitar and orchestral like musicianship. Lyrics are dreamy and romantic at times like in "Sleeping In" I like it when male lyricists can give up their tender side to the audience. I don't want to compare them to any other bands....This is great music! It is more like 10 Stars.

i honestly don't know what to make of the d.i.y./home computer approach to songwriting. it seems too many 'musicians' can plug their guitar or keyboard into their computers a few mouse clicks later, they've got a song--or an album for that matter. and since it's d.i.y., the 'critics' trip over themselves to declare 'the best new thing since ________.' most of the time however, it's a bunch of mindless, vapid drivel disguised as 'art.'
the first time i listened to 'pet grief,' i thought, 'here we go again--ANOTHER stephin merrit wannabee with a casio keyboard.' i have 'lesser matters,' the radio dept's first album, which is a much more guitar-centric album, and the new approach on 'pet grief' surprised me. and i listened to the first three or four tracks, i realized this wasn't, after all, another cheap, magnetic fields or vitesse imitation, but rather a really decent pop record. better than decent, actually. granted, it's not for everyone, but if you've an ear for great melody and interesting musical textures (it's a really fuzzy record), 'pet grief' will be a welcome addition to your cd collection. and for those of you who like comparisons, it's a little like, um, the magnetic fields meet my bloody valentine. it's easy to get lost in the sound, even if you can't really tell most of the songs apart. standouts include, 'the worst taste in music,' 'pet grief,' 'what will give,' 'a window,' and tell. if there is a downside, it's that most of the album is pretty similar in tempo and style and some folks might not stick around for the duration of the album. but i think those folks might be rare, 'cos a great sound, no matter how long the album, is well worth the time. a really, really good record.

I just found this band. I heard them from Marie Antoniette like most people and picked up more of their songs. I just want to listen to it and nothing else and just daydream!

I love this band and am very glad that Labrador finally domestically made Radio Dept.'s records available. Grab these while you can because they will surely go out of print in the near future. Nice little hybrid of Jesus and Mary Chain meets Belle and Sebastian. |
